LIBEL ACTION.

A BOOKMAKER'S CHARACTER. By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright. London, July 21. J. Stoddart, a bookmaker, has brought an action against the "Daily Mail," the "Evening News," and the "Despatoh" for publishing an alleged libellous record of his life after his conviction for the coupon frauds in 1009, the conviction having been subsequently quashed on a technical point. The defendants pleaded justification, on the ground that Stoddart had had a long career, of swindling, and had several times been warned off racecourses. The. rider of StoddartV horse, Red Rube, swore that he had been instructed not to win. A verdict for the defendants was entered up.

During 1907 and 1908 Stoddart was the -proprietor of a publication entitled the "Football Record." This publication announced that .£4OO was every week divided amongst'competitors who correctly predicted the results of certain sporting events. From October, 1907, to September, 190S, ,£22,000 was paid out in prizes, and of this amount .£ISOO went to bogus winners. Stoddnrt's defence was that he thought tho bogus winners were genuine, and, so ■ far from being guilty of fraud, he was himself tho victim of a conspiracy.
