JOTTINGS FROM WANGANUI.

'By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.) Wanganui, July 22. Tho work of raising tho dam , at tho Okehu waterworks is now completed, and is a decided success. The additional water storage thus gained removes all doubts as to the adequacy of the supply during tho approaching summer. ' It is stated that a strong local syndicate' has bought out Messrs. Thompson and Payne's Picture Show here, and takes over the same in a few days. Several erosions, have occurred on the town side of tho riverbank lately. One of these, at Aramoho, seriously threatened the stability of the tramway track, but a large amount of filling being put in the weak spot has been restored' to its original solidity. Two other washouts also occurred near the Plymouth Street groyne, which has also been slightly damaged, necessitating the renewal of the stono pitching; The damage, however, is not serious. At the annual meeting of the Wanga-. nui Horticultural Society, Mr. A. Doig was elected president. The balancesheet showed £1 Is. Sd. in hand. The society has been, for some time, in rather a parlous state as regards finances, and the meeting carried a vote of thanks to various creditors for thoir generosity in cutting certain amounts (in some cases 10s. in the £) off their accounts. A strong committee was formed, and there is every prospect of the society being put on a sounder footing in tho near future. At the annual meeting of the Wanganui Co-operative Bakery Society, it was announced that after allowing for depreciation, working expenses, and a slight loss .on tho previous year, a dividend of 6J per cent, would be paid, in addition to 3J per cent, on all fully paid-up shares since the start of tho society, making 10 per cent, in all. The meeting decided that, instead of taking the dividend, shareholders should allow tho accrued amounts to be placed to their credit on tho society's books on loan for twelve months. Mr. S. 0. Snow was elected president, and Messrs. T. Lovegrove, J. T. Muir, and G. Cotterill to tho vacancies on the committee.
