The. Misses Nathan and Mrs. Joseph Joseph's little girls helped to serve the tea.

"Ladies' Night." Thp "Wellington Savage Club's "Ladies' Night" has come to bo regarded as one of the chief, as well. as the jolliost, social functions of the winter season, and the Town Hall will bo taxed to its fullest extent to accommodate all thbso who have mado arrangements to bo present this evening. The secretary (Mr. J. Dykes) ! states that 800 ladies' and over 400 gentlemen's tickets have been issued, so that the assemblage should bo a brilliant one. The guests will include Sir Joseph and Lady Ward, a number of the Ministers, Captain Blunt and the officers of H.M.S. Pioneer. Departing from the usual methods, the entertainment Will be given in the big Town Hall, where the guests will be accommodated in groups round small tables a la cafe chantant, which should make for sociability and comfort. The great hall has been magnificently decorated, and the programme prepared is said to be in.keeping with the glittering environment. The entertainment is announced to commence at 7.55 p.m.

The Pioneer Club. * The Pioneer Club has now moved from its pretty rooms in Winder's Buildings to its new home in Hannah's Building, Lambton Quay. There it has three rooms, the largest of them overlooking Lambton Quay will serve for receptions. This is papered in cream and brown with a touch of pink in the frieze, ■ to match tho rose-col-oured carpets. Tho room, behind is the reading-room, and a sriialler one behind that is furnished as a sittingroom. The Reading ■ Circle will Hold its meeting in tho new room this evening. Terrace High School Dance. It St. Peter's. Hall last night tho Terrace High School ex-pupils gave their second annual dauce. The bull was decorated with lycopodiuin, and the stage furnished and decorated, while special attention had been'given to the decoration of the supper table with scarlet and yellow, the school colours. There was a very good attendance of ex-pupils and their friends. Tho committee were: Misses I. and H. Gooder, M. Brown, R. Moxhani, M. Siovwright, and P.. Gordon, and Messrs. P. Winchcomb, G. Burr, R. Ross, C. Dunne, and C. Smith. Mesdames Dinnie, Kerr, Gooder, Thompson, and M'Coll were the chapcrones.

Miss Warathy Winmill is now returning to her home in Lawrence, after a long holiday in Wellington. Invitations have been issued to the Star Boating Club Ball which is to be held in the Concert Room at the Town Hall on Tuesday, August 9. Our Mastorton correspondent states that a.'memorial tablet to the lato Miss Sutherland is to bo publicly unveiled at the Masterton Hospital to-, day. Mrs. Bunny and Miss Alice Riddiford from Mnsterton are staying at the Royal Oak. Mrs. Bunny returns to Masterton on Monday and Miss Riddiford goes down to Christchurch tonight. Miss May Hall is the cnest of Mr. and Mrs. Mawley, of Diltnn, Masterton. The beautiful decorations of the sup-per-room which were so much admired at the race ball were the work of Miss Cooper of Manners Street. Mrs. Roberts, from Duuedin, is the guest of her aunt, Mrs. Rhodes, at the Grange. Mrs. Stanton Harcourt leaves nest Friday to visit her sister in Sydney. Mrs..H. B. Mason is giving the second of a series of winter dances for her pupils on Monday, August 1. It will be a fancy dress and masque ball. Our Masterton correspondent records tho death of another pioneer of tho Wairarapa district, Mrs. Matthews, relict of the late Mr. Jacob Matthews. Dficeased, who was in her 80th year, arrived in the Dominion in 1856, and came to Masterton with her husband shortly afterwards. ■ The late Mr. Matthews was one of the original settlers who took up the Masterton. small farm block. Deceased leaves two sons (Messrs. Alfred and Charles Matthews), and one daughter (Mrs. 0. P. Wilton).
