—: -* — BOAED MEETING. Tho ■ Technical School Board met last evening. Present!: Messrs. T. Ballinger (chairman), T. Carmichoel, J. G.' W. Aitken, W. H. Field, M.l',, and D. Eobortson. . - ' . . .-, Tho chairman described -the rirrum--stances : under ' which" tho Technical School Sites Bill had been thrown out' by the Gity Council at its last .meeting. He stated also that, the previous day, Mr. La Trobe himself had waited upon the Minister to see what : they could obtain in the way of funds to build lUpon the , corporation site. They wore in-formed.-that tho Government could only supply funds by way of a subsidy. Thero seemed nothing for it but to go slowly-for'a timo until the' council realised that it was injuring the school. A long letter to. tho chairman from tho AVellington Provincial Industrial Association, detailing particulars of tho agreement between tho board and the association, was laid on tho table; Consideration was deferred until next meeting. A letter was received from the Public Trusteo, stating that the incoino from the Callander Bequest, which was being capitalised for livo years, would- be available on March 31, 1911. ' The director stated that the total capital available would be £3430. Invested at 4J- per cent., this would'produce for' the first year an income if £152. This would bo divided between tho AVellington and Dunedin Technical Sohools, and utilised in providing scholarships. , On the motion of Mr. Aitken,. it was agreed that the matter be referred to tho director, ho to report at next meet-, ing.as to how the money could be expended to the best advantage in promoting tho interests of technical education. The director will, if necessary, communicate with tho director of tlio Dunedin Technical School. The Christchurch Technical Education Board drew attention to a change of policy on the part of tho Government in making grants for tho erection of buildings required in tho furtherance of technical education. Tho Minister, in replying to an application _ from Christchurch for a necessary building, had laid it down that a. policy should be gradually enforced of making grants for such purposes only as a £ for £ subsidy in local contributions; Tho Christchurch Church Board considered it unfair that the Government should differentiate in this way between technicaland ordinary education, and asked the board to support- it in. making a strong protest to the Department, and to join in a deputation to the Minister. It was decided to reply that i the board would be glad to co-operate in tho manner indicated.
