PROVINCIAL CENTRES.

(From Onr Spoeial' Correspondent!.) $ „ FEATHERSTON. The rccont slip • on the Rimutaba Road has hotv all been cleared away, and tho road is in very fair order at the present time, save for a short piece just at Abbott's Creek, at the foot of the hill. This creek, owing to the persistent rain lately experienced, overflowed its banks and scoured the road out. Care should be taken by motor-cars, as this wash-out is- somewhat difficult to negotiate after nightfall.

SHANNON.

There is still a good deal of water ill the low-lying country around Shannon. The Moutoa Swamp was very largely under water and in parts, to a consid--01 able depth. During the height of the flood an improvised ferryman did a roaring trade from the bridge across the Manawatu to within a quarter of a milo of tho town. The topic of discussion at the local Debating Society's meeting on Tuesday night in tho Druids' llall was: "That profit-sharing is the cure for labour troubles." Mr. W. 11. Gunning presented the motion in a speech dealing comprehensively with the subject, and was supported by Messrs. Barclay, Hensman, Exall, Clayton, and Solby. Mr. L. O'Connor, whoso chief henchman was Mr. Gibb, ably responded. Mr. P. Oag also supported tho negative. Tho motion was carried by an almost two-to-one majority. Mr. Clayton contributed materially to. the "joy of nations" by a practical demonstration of the incentive, which profit-sharing or a bonus on sales afforded to a salesman in tho "dress department" of a large London warehouse. Mr. B. Brown will, on Tuesday night, deliver nn address on the "Financial Aspect of No-License." The Levin Y.M.C.A. are likely to make an attempt to regain the laurels which they lost in the recent contest with Shannon. The winter garden fete, organised by tho Jlc.thodist Church, promises to be a great success and will be held on July 52 and- 2a.
