Mr. Gretton's Bill prohibiting the use of hop substitutes, etc., was read a first time. ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION. July 20. Tho Devonian Association has made a special appeal to Devonians to raise the balance of the fund to provide for tho cost of Captain Scott's Antarctic expedition. OBITUARY. London, July 20. The death is announced oi' Sir Henry Lunu, M.P., who of late. yearn has arranged many exchanyes of visits between tho municipal bodies of England and Germany. The late Sir H. Lunu was formerly a medical missionary in India for many years. CENSUS BILLS. London, July 20. The House of Lords dealt with the Census (Britain) Bill—report stage. It retained, by 32 votes to 29, the provision for inclusion in the census papers of a ,column showing the religions of the 'people. The Census of Ireland Bill_ was also considered and read a third time LAWYERS AND FEES. London, July 20. In acknowledging Mr. Lloyd-George's letter of July 13 the English Law Society says it is profoundly disappointed at his inability to withdraw the imputations against the legal profession. LIGHTNING STRIKES AEROPLANE. Paris, July 20. Lightning struck M. Ehrmann's aeroplane at Paris and ignited it. The aeroplane fell to the ground, but . the aviator cscaped without sustaining: any injury. FRENCH NUNS DROWNED. Paris, July 20. The stormy weather in France continues. Two nuns were drowned in tho ; cellar of the convent at Epinal, in the Department of Vosges, owing to an inrush of flood water. BOILER BURSTS. Madrid, July 20. At Fuento Ovejuna, in Spain, the boiler in a mine burst. Three persons were killed and twelve injured.. OUTLOOK IN CANADA. Ottawa, July 20. "The Times" Ottawa correspondent reports that Canada's imports during the first quarter of the fiscal year totalled in value ,621,876,000, and her exports .£12,359,900. MYSTERY SOLVED. Perth, July 21. The mysterious vessel reported to have been seen at Capo Farquhar recently is accounted for by Dr. Yule, .a missionary. He states that he met two schooners, which were engaged in trepang fishing. BRISBANE GAS TROUBLE. . Brisbane, July 21. Tho gasworks company lias agreed to a conference with tho men's representatives, and will endeavour to arrive at an amicable settlement ol" the gasworks trouble. The strike at the gasworks lias ended, and the men have accepted the company's olfer to find outside work for the strikers.
