ART GALLERIES.
— -4 STATE AID ASKED FOR. Among the petitions presented to Parliament yesterday was one in favour of the establishment of art galleries, open free to the public, in Aucklandj Wellington, Christclnuch, and Dunedin. The petition, which was introduced by Mr. Wilford, was signed on behalf of the art societies in the four chief centres. It goes on to state that in nearly all civilised countries public art galleries are aided an&, assisted, if not maintained, by the State. The petitioners prayer that such sum as the Government might see fit might be granted for the purchase of works of art for the Auckland Society of Art, the New Zealand Academy of Pine Art (Wellington), the Canterbury Society of Art (Chnstchurch) and the Otago Society of Art (Dunedin), to which the public shall have the right of free entrance subject to such reasonable exceptions and restrictions as are usual in respect of public art galleries.
