Eossell Lankshear, late of Victoria College, will be pleased to learn that he has been appointed by Ihe Senate of the Victoria University, Manchester, to a lectureship in physics and chemistry, tenable for three years. At the Acclimatisation Conference held yesterday a vote of sympathy and condolence was passed to the relatives of the ■late Mr. J. E. Wilson, a Taranaki mem--I>er. Captain Percival Currie has resigned his position as president and member of the Marine Board of Victoria. He had bu'n a member since 1891, and president since 1895. The resignation was tendered on the advice of his doctor to reduce the number of his appointments. Mr. K. Uyeno, late Consul-Goneral- for Japan in Australia, has been pi-omoted to the position ol private secretary to the Minister of the Imperial Household and officer of ceremonies oi- the Imperial Court at Tokio. Mr. Uyeno has been absent from Japan in the consular service for over 17 years, with only three holiday breaks. "I am the only honorary doctor of medicine in the United States," said Dr. Bell, the inventor of the telephone, when asked in Sydney if he ever practised as a doctor, "It was an honorary degree given to me by Heidelberg on account of some contributions I made to the art- of surgery. When President Garfield lay dying, I made experiments to enable them lo ascertain the position of the bullet by means of electricity. I am doctor of philosophy, law, science, and I am very proud to be an LL.D. of Edinburgh, where I was born, and u D.Sc. of Ox- ■ ford." Mr. W. C. Riley, of the local branch of Messrs. Ross and Glendining, has been • transferreu to Napier. Before his departure last Monday night, members of the Wellington Football Club presented him with a suit case as a recognition of his services to the club over a period of six seasons. Mr. L. Sellnrs, of the staff of Thos. Cook and Sons, and a prominent member of the Wellington Football Club, was last night the recipient of a silver cigarette case from,his clubniates on the occasion of 1113 transfer to Melbourne. Theed, re--1 cently of this city, will learn with regret of the death of his father, Dr. : Theed, who died at Warricknabeal, Victoria, on Saturday last, after a long illness. Mr. Theed has decided to remain •ill Australia, and is at present residing at Moree, New South Wales. Messrs. Benjamin Carter, P. G. Glastonbury, .15. J. Bridgman, and V. K Lough have been appointed cadets in the Valuation Department. The Rev. J. C. A. Calder (Cluireh of England) and the Rev. J. Douglas Milt (Baptist; have been appointed officiating ministers under the provisions of the Marriage Act. Dr. Foster, assistant house surgeon at the Wellington Hospital, who has been appointed resident house surgeon at the Chwstchuroh Hospital, was yesterday accorded a vote of appreciation by the Wellington Hospital and Charitablo Aid Board, in token of his past services. Dr. Brown was appointed to succeed Dr. Foster as assistant house nurgeon. Mr. E. J. Watt, of Hawke's Bay, arrived in Wellington last evening. "My health has not been satisfactory recently," said Air. Glover in the House of Kepresentatives iast night. "If I recover I will again appeal to my good people of Auckland Central, but "if unfortunately from circumstances " bevond my control I cannot stand, I will bow to the inevitable/' Mr. Glover expressed the hope that he would be able to stand.
