ARBOR DAY.

Arbor Day (yesterday) was very quietly observed. There was very, little of tlie enthusiasm; which, marked the observance ' of the previous occasion, when large, parties from the various schools sallied' forth to the city reserves, and - spent strenuous" hours, in tree-planting. His "Worship the Mayor (Mr; T. 1 M. Wilford,. M.P.), with Mrs. Wilford, paid a visit to the Botanical Gardens' in the afternoon, and imparted a {.ouch of ceremonial to the city's observance by planting a tree, making a few remarks, appropriate to tbe : occasion. In . view of the greater urgency of other, city works, he said, the City Council had not committed itself to any expenditure in treeplanting, and though a • considerable amount of planting was -being done in various parts of the city, it was beiiig carried out, without any expense to the council. . ; Nearly , all. the city schools . observed .the day. >as a. close holiday, tree-planting operations being carried out only by one or two schools. • The scholars attending the Normal School at Thorndon w-sro assembled in the morning, and special lessons relating to' the occasion were given. Interesting -lessons on various native shrubs w*re delivered -in the junior classes, while the larger question of afforestation engaged; the attention of the senior, classes. At the invitation of Lieut.-Commander H. N. MTeod, tho boy scouts mustered at the city boundary, and were there presented with young trees for planting in the neighbourhood of their homes.
