"MY LADY NICOTINE."
AN APPLICATION FROM . STUDENTS. My Lady Nicotine was offered up for serious criticism at the meeting ol thy Victoria College Council last evening, when the application o£ the Stndents' Association for permission to admit "He? Ladyship" to the men's common room at the college was further considered. The matter came up at the last meeting of the council, but was referred back to the association for further information, which replied, that the application in question was made in thv ninne of' all the students. At present smoking is allowed in the: men's dressing room, and also in the social hall (when ladies are not there). The dressing room is described/as a, cold and cheerless place for' the enjoyment: ut a,quiet pipe, while smoking in the social hall has its drawbacks. Hence .the desire'for. the common room — snug retreat. The question was: Should Lady Nicotine be allowed in the common room? . ' ,'y Sir Robert Stout said no, with emphasis. He had been reading up the subject of smoking lately. Tobacco smoking was one of the worst habits the students I could possibly acquire. It was injurious physically and mentally. Further.., the | common room was used by non-smokers as well as smokers, and why. should they have to put up with the filthy trash ?, . , . - > Mr. C. Wilson, who. admitted that he was, in a manner of speaking, a slave to the weed, broke a lance for the students,' but said that if they'were given .the use of the common room they should give up the social hall. • The chaiim'an (Mr. H. F. Von Haast) said that he was a non-smoker, but" he saw no reason why the application should not be granted. It was finally agreed to grant the use of the common room, Mr. AVilson to give notice of motion with respect-to his suggestions regarding-the social hall.
