PALMERSTON NEWS.

(From Oar Special CorreaoondenU NEW SCHOOL ASKED FOR. A DISCOURAGING ARBOR DAY. Palmerston, July 20. Householders of the borough living in the vicinity of Foxton lino have been agiI'tating for some time to secure a public school for that end of the town. A public meeting was held so long -ago as February last, immediately after which a petition was circulated and signed, and sent on to the Wanganui Education . Board. It only now appears that tho petition was not■' in proper form, and no- ■ thing had been done in the matter. Last evening another meeting of householders was held in Blackbourn's Hall, Mr. J. Nairn in the chair, when, on the motion of Mr. 'J?. J. Tasker, it was resolved to send a deputation of three to put the case before tho Wanganui Education Board at its ne.\t meeting. One of the speakers ai the meeting stated that he had been, told by the chairiiian of the board (Mr. F. Pirani) that the householders would have to providu half the cost of a site' for the proposed school befojo the board would move in the matter. With tho extremely high value of land in this locality it was thought that it would be quite impossible to raise this amount. The College Street and Campbell Schools at present servo the Foxton line locality, but both these schools are a long way off, and the locality in which ' it is proposed to place tho new school is becoming so populous that it is fully entitled to a school of its, own. At the Palmerston Technical School on Friday evening next a lecture on woolclassing will be given by Mr. E. J. Wilson, of Johnsonville, a well-known sheepbreedei. . ' Tho Oroua Lodgo of-Druids met' last night, when there was a large attendance, Bro, Harriman being in the chair. Two new members were initiated, and four - others proposed. , The Minister -for Internal Affairs wrote granting the lodge permission to hold an art union for the purpose of raising funds to augment its. benevolent and regalia funds. The principal prizes in this art union will bo two pictures, • which wero exhibited at the Christchurch Exhibition. At tho conclu- • sion of the, business a progressive euchre,-, party was held, the competitors being' members and lady friends. The prizes' were won by Miss Richardson and Mrs. J, Humphrey. The euchre party was followed by -a dance..- ■, The Pohangina School is to be equipped with technical appliances, so that lessons 1 in woodwork anil cookery may be given. ; "To do away with, the bookmaker," waa the subject -which engaged the. attention of the Palmerston Literary and Debating Society at its weekly meeting last night. At the conclusion of an interesting debate a vote was taken, resulting in a tie. A mock Parliament will be ' held nest week. The Men's Free Club, which was opened last week, has been patronised extremely well by one class of the community, so well, 111 fact, that they became a nuisance, and have had to be prohibited tha use of the rooms. All the small and large boys of the town congregate there, to the exclusion of those for whom the club waaintonded, and the committee has 'been compelled to excludo ull boys under 14 years of age. Heavy rain came on about one o'clock this afternoon, and put a stop to outdoor games, and completely spoilt the Arbor Day proceedings of the Borough Council and Beautifying Society. Mayor and several councillors and citizens were not deterred by- the rain, however. They turned out, and made ' n start, but the downpour increasing they tvero obliged to desist, and the work of planting in a number of streets will be completed by the Borough Curator .and his staff. In the morning, at the Camp.bell Street School, Mr. H. Palmer (chairman of tho committee) gave a short address to the children, and a number of trees were planted. At the .Terrace End School a similar .function was carried out under the guidance of • the Mayor," who is also chairman of the School.Committee. J " Here';'al'sb' l 'a;Vnuniber of 'trees wai'o planted. Tlio children ut both schools were granted a holiday for the rest of the day. Nothing in the'way of tree-planting. was done at the College. Street School, as the grounds are already, fully' with .trees and . shrubs. A bazaar in ftid •>{ th» fundi of tills school is to be held to-morrow. ' The'residence of Sir. Marton Johansen, of Stoney Creek, was destroyed by fire' this morning about ten o'clock. , When the fire was discovered it had got;'such a. " hold that nothing could' be done to prevent tho destruction of the building. A. number of settlers wore quickly on. tho! scene, and rendered assistance in gettinjj out tho furniture, a good deal of which was saved. The origin of the firo is attributed to a defective chimney. At the Magistrate's Court, before Mr. A. D. Thomson, S.M., Mrs. Julia Bennett, of -Awahuri, sued A.: Wilcocks for. damage's alleged to be du? to tain l ,,; run down by his uot:>r-cir. The affair, )t was stated., Jiappened in April last on the Raugitikei inw, near-. Palaißvsioa. Tho evidence of the plaintiff was to the effect that she was cycling on.the road, on the wrong side, -with Mrs. Rogers, of Awahuri, who was on the right side.. The motor-car came up behind, and Mrs. .Roger's-called hoi attention, to it,".; She attempted to cross over front of the car .to the left side of tho road, but-, was run down. Her bicycle was smashed, and she. was considerably bruised. Tho case was dismissed, the S.M. stating that, negligence had not been proved.
