(By Telegraph—Press Association.) UNUSUAL MAINTENANCE CASE. CAN A SISTER.BE SUED? Chrlstchurch, July 19. During the hearing of a case- in tho Magistrate's Court this morning, the question was. raised whether a sister cculd ■bo sued under the Destitute Persons Act. Reference to. tho Act convinced the Court ■ that, although a brother was a near relative within tho meaning , of the law, a' sister was not, and the Court therefore could not n.ake a maintenance order against tho. sister of an applicant. STATUARY AND VANDALS. Auckland, July 19. An ■ extraordinary act of vandalism was perpetrated in Albert Park during the night. Eleven handsome vases and two small pieces of statuary have been knocked from their pedestals and were found lying on the. ground. Four vases wero moro or less damaged; the others were hardly injured. The '.ornaments were part" of the valuable Boyd bequest. It is impossible to conceive the object of the. act which was presumably tho result of. a drunken freak, j CHURCH CHANCED TO THEATRE. Christchurch, July 19. Sydenham ward of tho city is to bo provided with a permanent picture' show, a syndicate having bought a building formerly used as a church, vith a viow of converting it into a theatre.. ■"■.■■ COURAGEOUS CONSTABLE. Auckland, July 19. Constable Clayton was informed at 11 o'clock last night;that a suspicious character had entered a house in Eden Crescent. He discovered a.man harefooted, .who bolted. The policeman pursued and overtook, him, and tlio man drew a .knife..- The policeman grappled with and disarmed him.. Investigation showed that three houses had oeon entered. A bundlo of clothing was found on the premises where the prisoner was discovered, together with a pair of boots and socks. When tho barque Jessie Craig arrived at Lyttelton to-day from Port. Huon, Tasmania, she reported that tho chief officer was ill with typhoid fever. •
