ATHLETIC SPORTS.

FOOTBALL. THE ARRIVAL OF THE MAORIS. MANAGER SUMS UP THE TOUR. Tliu Maori team that lately toured Australia arrived in Wellington yesterday, and, to judge by the appearance of its members, and the record oi their, tour, should give an excellent account of itself in tho match against n eliington to-day. A Dominion representative yesterday sought out Mr. W. T. Parata, the manager of tho team, and 'found him communicative. The enterprise, he explained, was, from the outset, independent of the ■Rugby Union.' It was initiated by a committee of prominent young Maoris who shouldered the whole responsibility and will bear the financial loss in which the tour has resulted. Football, although a leading consideration, was not the, only one taken into account when the tour was organised. The promoters were desirous of extending the educational attainments of the young Maoris composing the team, and of conferring on them the advantages that only travel and an enlarged, environment can afford. In this respect'the tour has had a very distinct value. The members of the team are mostly old boys of Te Aute and. other schools' and colleges. Some of them, ac tlie commencement of the tour, had spent several years in the backblocka, and their manager states that they showed improving form all through the tour. The. team's success lay in open play. They seldom ..got the ball from the scrum, and all their tries wereU scored from passing rushes, organised by general cleverness in the open. Mr. Parata mentioned, as. a notable fact, in the first three matches against New South Wales, only two penalties were awarded against the Maori team and throughout the tour no man either in the team or in tie ranks of its opponents . was seriously hurt.. The part of the tour now in progress in .New Zealand was arranged at. the last moment,. and by separate agreement with the various provincial Rugby Unions. Southland and Manawatu asked for matches. The team itself approached Otago, and to-day's match with Wellington was only arranged on Saturday last. Summarising the results of the tour, Mr. Paiati remarked that the financial loss was more than balanced by the educational benefit. Also the nature of its performance in* the football field entitled some of its members to inclusion in future New Zealand representative teams. Apart from thia, other tours by Maori teams might be organised in the future. Already proposals had been received that a tour of Great Britain should be undertaken. , In conclusion, ,Mr. Parata denied the correctness of the oft-repeated reproach that a football tour . tends to unsettle the players engaged. TO-DAY'S MAORI TEAM. The Maori team for to-day's match against Wellington, at Athletic Park, is as follows: H. Poananga, S. Ryland, R. Nuku, G. Rogers, M. Winiata, A. Eaipara, S. Piki, J. Hall, W.Cunningham, P. Warbrick,, M. Paratene, B. Tamu, W. Winiata, A. Takarangi (captain), and J. Martin. Several of these names are familiar to followers of the game. Takarangi was here last year as captain of the Wanganui representatives, M. Winiata is a frequent visiting player from Levin, Cunningham is a player of All-Black fame, and Tamu is a representative player from TaranakL ■■ THE INTER-ISLAND MATCH,"'" The only remaining football fixture iu which, the, New Zealand Rugby Union is . directly, concerned ■ this season is the North v. South match, which will. probably bo got off towards tie end of August. So far no date has l>oen fixed, but the secretary (Mr. J. D. Avery) has circularised provincial unions, asking advice as to. their arrangements, so that a date nfay be selected for the big match which will not interfere to any extent with such arrangements. The North v. South match has been played in Wellington for the last two years, but it has not so far been fixed,- where this season's game will be played. AMERICAN-OTAGO MATCH. COUNCIL MEETING. A meeting of the New Zealand ■ Football Association was held in the Y.M.C.A. last evening, Mr. J. J. Roberts presiding. In connection with the default of Taranaki in regard to the Brown Shield match against Wellington on Saturday next-, it was resolved that their challenge bo declared void, and their fee forfeited. If they, desired a match in , the future, a rcchallenge would be necessary. The Canterbury Association in a let- ' tor regretted that a North Island v. South Island match could not be played seeing thatVa game of that description, played at Christchurch would give the game an impetus iu their district. Tho New South Wales Football Asso- , ciation wrote asking for a copy of rules governing'the Brown Shield competition held in New Zealand. The secretary was instructed to furnish full particulars. ... A letter was received from the secretary of the Southland Association, in answer te the question of 4 forming another club in InrercargiU,. stating that' Northern. Unionism. was much in evidence, and a club consisting of many disqualified Bugby players had beenformed. ■ The matter had therefore been left over for the present. _. Tho Auckland Association wrote ask- . mg for information regarding the suspension of Harrison (Otago) and Johnstone (Wellington). The secretary (Mr.. B. L. Salmond) intimated that he had had no word of Harrison's disqualification. It was resolved that'the Ota"o Association be written, to, and that\ circular letter be drafted to all associations asking for lists of all disqualifica- • tions with copies of evidence, the same * . to be forwarded to the various associations throughout New Zealand. _ The secretary was instructed to advise Otago that their.challenge for the Brown Shield was next on the list, and: to ask them te arrange a,' date with: Wellington. : .'■ ■ -■ ' Mr. H. L. Godber was appointed referee in the next Brown Shield match, and Mr. H. Yeomans linesman. A lengthy discussion took place as te the right of associations to set up appeal boards. The chairman considered ' that the present position of appeal boards was absurd, as "the New Zealand Council had the final vote, and was in, itself an appeal board: However, thematter would be looked into when newrules were being drafted.
