The inconvenience which may arise in, consequence of the. vacant position of Chairman of Committees not having vet been tilled was referred to by. the Leader of the Opposition in. the House yesterday. .■. "So , far," replied the Prime Minister, "no inconvenience has been occasioned, and with , , a knowledge of what is to come before the House 1 can say that :there is not likely to'be any inconvenience:" Sir Josepiv added that he hoped to' be able to make a statement to the.House, in regard to the matter early, next week. '.- ■ Subsequciitly-Mr. Massey asked what would happen supposing that the Speaker became indisposed. There would not bo an Acting-Speaker to tako his place. Tho .position ought to be remedied at once; . • The ■ Prime Minister then remarked that ho recognised that it would bo necessary to make an appointment at an early date.; During the past week there was no opportunity to consider the : matter. _ Mr. : Hemes ; In the meantime priva'te'Bills are hung up. : ( Sir Joseph: They havo not yet been, reached.' In reply to Mr. Massey the Prime Minister stated that Mr. Laurenson would act as Chairman in connection with the bringing down of tlio Budget. Mr. Berries: Supposing we don't elect him?' (Laughter.) Sir Joseph: I will have his name taken off tho.'document. Mr. Herries: It would bo impossible. : Mr. Massey: You are too slippery. (Langhtcr.)
