MASTERTON COUNCIL.

SEWAGE POLL TO.BE TAKEN. There was a full attendance .of coun« cillors at the ■ ordinary meeting of the Masterton Borough Council last evening, at which Mr. J. M. Coradine (Mayor) presided. '" ■ ■ / On the recommendation of Councillor Ewington, it was decided to obtain particulars regarding birch timber for the purposes of constructing culverts. The Public Trustee notified that the Abattoirs Loan of ,£2ot)o, which had been borrowed from the Government fi*-e years ago at-5 per cent.j had expired, and offered to renew same at a.similar rate for forty years. The question of rearranging the loan was left in the hands of the Mayor and Councillor' Elliott. . It was decided, on the-motion of Councillor Pauling, to proceed forthwith with the installation of a Simplex electric fire alarm, tho Fire Board to provide any money required after the expenditure o£ tho ,£lB9 Gs. lid. in the hands of the council. ' » Mr. Blackman, gas manager,' reported' that, in his opinion, the number of prospective consumers did not warrant the extension of gas mains in High Street. The (gas manager was authorised to extend the mains from Pownell Street to the interception of Villa Street". The borough engineer submitted his supplementary report on the proposed sewage works, in which he estimated the cost of putting down 421 chains of water mains along the roads which were to be reticulated by the drainage at .£2326. He expressed the opinion that the expenditure for the extension of water mains was not imminent. He also stated that neither of tho sites selected for the out-' fall had been affected by the recent floods. . ■ The Mayor moved that the scheme outlined by the engineer for the extension of the sewage scheme of the town be approved, and that the necessary steps be taken to rake a poll of the ratepayers on the loan proposals. Councillor Pauling seconded the motion. Councillor Eigg said that he had confidence that the ratepayers would see the force of facing the drainage, question. He was sorry that the council was divided on the question', but lie believed that, notwithstanding what had been said against the scheme, it would appeal to the great bulk of the ratepayers. Councillor Pragnell strongly supported the scheme. He thought that every ratepayer in the borough should have the same privilege in the matter of drainage as himself, and he thought it grossly unfair for some people to say, "We have got what we want; o,thers can go to tho devil." . Councillor. Elliott: "They have no drainage there." Councillor- Rigg: "But they want water." Councillor Hoar: "There are plenty of opponents of Hip drainage there." Councillor En - in- r nii again vigorously oppessi tti3 proposal* Councillor Klliocc said he opposed the proposal because he did not think that it would be carried, and the ratepayers would be put to unnecessary expense. The motion of tho Mayor was eventually carried, Councillors Elliott, Temple, and Ewingtoft voting against it;
