WATER FOR EASTBOURNE.
A VALUABLE EJEPOBt.
Mr. R. S. Rounthwaite, . M.lnst. C.E., has prepared an important toport on a water supply for the borough of Eastbourne. For some years the Borough Council has had this matter under consideration, and often the midsummer cries for. water were audible enough, mingled, as they were, with the loud "tom-tom" symphony beaten on empty tanks by exasperated householders. At one time tho prospect of a water supply became so near that many of the householders provided their domiciles with > water service, but'no drop of water has ever moistened the parched lips of the brass taps. Eastbourne tried for an artesian supply, but the water would not come. It has also , talked of damming up all the little streams that trickle tranquilly from the hills to the harbour, but careful measurement of the flow has proved that such a supply would be inadequate for the future of the place.
Mr. Rounthwaite's scheme, which is to be considered at a special meeting of the Borough Council, to be held ott Saturday evening, involves tunnelling through the hill at the back of Muritai at a convenient level, which will at once provide easy means for tapping the Gollan's Valley stream, and a splen. did fall for the water. ■ The engineer estimates that a 6ft. tunnel, 22 chains in length (the calculated length of the bore),-would cost the borough £3000.
