MASTERTON NOTES.

Mr. J. Dineen, truant officer of the Wellington Education Board, has been visiting, the Wairarapa district. The attendance at the various schools in the district has been somewhat seriously affected during the winter by tho prevalence of whooping cough and other juvenile complaints. ' The exigencies of dairying have also mode their toll upon many of the young who should have boen at school. ' A period of exceptionally wet weather was experienced last w£ek, and resulted in considerable damage to roads in tho district. It has been succeeded by two beautiful days. Although farming operations haw been delayed by the wet weather, agricultural .prospects look very bright. Some light-fingered individual relieved tho Dalefield. footballers, who visited Masterton on Saturday, of, about £6. Members of local, church choirs ha™ been doing good service of late by visiting the hospital .on Sundays, and giving short sacred concerts. The first , consignment of machinery for the Wellington Fanners' Meat Company's new works arrived this morning. Tho share capital subscribed to date for the company totals over ,£40,000, and it is reported that applications for shares continue to come in freely. There is said to have been a marked decrease in the . number of rabbits on properties oh the East Coast during the last fow months. This is due' in a measure to systematic poisoning operations and severe weather. Mr. A. Thomas, a young man who was known for some years as a coach-driver on the road between Masterton and the East Coast, and who was very- popular with settlers, di-sd iii the Masterton Hospital on Saturday evening, at the age of 33. . There was a large congregation at Knox Church on Sunday morning, when Miss Isabel Miller was ordained deaconess by,the Eev. L. Thompson. ' The Eev. T. Fee, of Wellington, will visit Masterton. this week to confer with the office-bearers of the local Methodist Church in regard to the situation that has arisen' through the resignation of tho Eev. C. E. Porter, and other matters.
