Colonel Hawkins, Officer Commanding •tho Canterbury District, and Mrs. Hawkins, accompanied by Colonel and Mrs. Henderson, of Invercargill, left Auckland on a trip to the Islands by the Navua last week. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Beauchamp, of Wellington, have left on a trip to the South Sea Islands. They will return by way of Sydney, and will be absent for about six weeks, Mr. \V. H. K. Wanklyn, secretary to the New Zealand Racing Conference, arrived from Chnatehurch yesterday by the Maori. The Californian footballers left for Lyttelton by the Mararoa on Saturday night. They spent yesterday in Christchurch, and proceed to Dunedin to-day. Mr. W. G. Garrard, secretary of tho Canterbury Rugby Union, has been appointed to represent tho New Zealand Union and travel with the Californian University footballers in the South Island. Mr. M. C. Dahl, manager of the dairy produce department of Messrs. W. Weddel and Co., London, will arrive in Wellington from Australia on'.Wednesday. ■ • . Mr. John Rankin, late town clerk.of Feilding, has been appointed town clerk at Anderson's B a y> Dunedin. On Friday evening (says our Feilding. correspondent) Halcombo residents gave a send-off to Mr, W. Morton, stationmaster, who has been promoted to a larger station. The proceedings wero. of a very enthusiastic nature, and Mr. Morton, who has been a very popular public servant, was made the recipient of a large number of presentations. The members of .Williamson's Grand Opera Company, including Mdlle. Bel Sorel and Miss Amy Castles, will pass through Wellington en route to' Melbourne via Sydney on Friday next. During the season in the Victorian capital the company will be seen m the groat double bill, • "Cavalleria Rusticana" and "I Pagliacci," which operas have been-rehearsed in New Zealand. Police-Inspector Gillies, of Christ church, who has been too ill to attend to his duties for some weeks past, is now reported to be greatly improved in health. —Press Association. Professor Franklin ' Peterson, Mus. Bac, was appointed Ormond professor of music for a third term of five years by the Melbourne University Council at its last meotiug. Mr. Howard Hadley has been appointed to conduct the practical examinations in music in New Zealand this year, held under the auspices of the Associated Board of tho R.A.M. and R.C.M., London. As there are. sonic 2000 candidates to be examined, Mr. Hadley will be in the Dominion for about, four mrmths. This iR Mr. Hadley's first visit to New Zealand, but he has conducted examinations in England •and Australia-. Ho is duo in Auckland in August, and is expected to reach Wellington in October. Mr. D. G. Smart) solicitor, of the staff of Messrs., Moorhouse and Hadfiekl, was on Saturday admitted a barrister of the Supreme Court by the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout), on the motion of Mr. Hadfield. Captain Post, of the Tutanekai, and Captain Felix Black returned to Wellington by the Mapourika from Greymouth, whero they had acted as assessors at the Lauderdalo inquiry.
