THE TURF.

RACING AT TRENTHAM. FIRST DAY. PAISANO WINS THE HURDLES. ' .VICTORY FOR BOLLIN. SUCCESS OF KARAMU STABLE. .To say: t the least of it, the prospects For the opening day of tho Wellington Racing Club's winter 'meeting wero' anything but bright on Saturday morning. t Heavy rain had fallen over-night, and the morning air was cold and damp. As the day wore on the conditions improved somewhat, and the attendance at Trentham was very satisfactory for a winter meeting, the crowd including a large number of visitors. Lord Islington was among thoso present. The grounds were looking bright, but they, had received such a drenching that hay had to be spread in those parts where the crowds mostly Congregate.' The track was very heavy, and the timos in all tho races were consequently slow. Big fields faced the starter in all of the events, and the.racing axiom, ''the bigger the field the greater the was demonstrated on this occasion, as four first faVourites and a second favourite were among the winners of the seven races. A.day for the'.favourites usually means good totalisator returns, and tho in- , vestments on Saturday amounted to £11,052, an increase of £1148 on the figures tor the corresponding day of the last winter meeting. Thirty-ono bookmakers were licensed, the club' receiving some £440 in fees. The principal event. during the • day ; the Winter Hurdles, was won by Paisano, who has only been beaten once in the five jumping races which he'has contested. The Parliamentary Handicap was won by Bollin after a ; great finish, with Merrie Zealand. A feature of the day's : racing was the success of the Hon. J. D. Ormond's colours, which wero carried to victory in three races and into third place in another.. The winners are 3ll : trained by Waddell, and were Tidden by F. D. Jones. Rongomai was fourth, and Tina Toa fifth. Time, lmin. 9 3-ssec. ' . NOTES ON THE RACING. • : • (By GiBNCOE.) Both of C. Pritehard's candidates— Mon. Ami and Te Ru—were withdrawn from the Stewards' Handicap, leaving a field of nine to go to the post. For some time after the betting opened ■there was a good price on'offer about tho field, but when Jenkins was announced as tho rider of Electrakoff a rush set in for the Auckland horse, and he eventually closed a warm favourite. Althoxigh Electrakoff. did not commence quite as quickly as some of the other*, ho was in a winning position at the end of the second furlong. Before the straight was reached he had drawn clear of the held, and finally won with the greatest of ease. He evidently reyels in the soft going, and, even allowing that somo of tho'other candidates were not ridden out, it would have taken' a good one to beat him on Saturday. As a yearling Electrakoff changed hands for £20, and when it is ■remembered , that he secured nine consecutive victories at country meetings in the Auckland district, it must be said that he hasialready proved a great bargain-- , ' ■ ■ . ■ Thirteen starters contested the Miramar Handicap, for which, the Karamu candidate Elfish was mado favourite, with Penza second in demand. A surprise was ,in store for backers, as Multiple managed to beat the two favourites. . The winner's chance was not highly esteemed, because it seemed a difficult task for him to concede.nearly all of tho, candidates over a stone in such heavy going. His most dangerous opponent, Elfish, had rather a bad passage in trm early stages of tho race, otherwise the finish might have beon more interesting. In a field of seven, AVhite Cockade iras mado favourite for tho Peninsula Hurdle Handicap, but Maharnnui, Arclight, and Ilosegrovo were all fairly well backed. The favourite was ■ first over tho initial obstacle, and from that stage he had the race .won.. Millennial took tho lead at the mile post, but it was only on suffemnce, and before the next furlong post was reached, White Cockade went to the front again, and then drow right away from the field. White Cockade mado his debut over hurdles as recently ns' last month, when he won at Ashburton. Tmganini and Tawhaki were tho only withdrawals from tho. Parliamentary Handicap. Tho fourteen starters received a grent deal of attention as they paraded in the birdcage, and also during the "preliminaries'." Penates, who had not raced since tho Wangauui meeting, scarcely looked himselfi

while Ngapuka, who may have gone off during tho last couple of days, was restless when being saddled, but little or no fault could bo found with the condition of tho other twelve. California, wW has always been a great favourite with tho Trontham crowds, was made first in tho investments, and next in demand were Sir Frisco and Ngapuka. Sir Frisco had won tho last two contests for the Parliamentary Handicap, and there wero who would not hear of his defeat on Saturday. Always a gross little horse, he was the picture of good health, and with tho course right to his liking and Hatch in the saddle, no other candidate looked so much a winner as thoy left the paddock. His backers figured it out that with his usual brilliancy ho would bo a couple of lengths ahead of the field 'down the back stretch, then steadied round tho bottom' turn and sent along again in the straight to stall off an expected late rush by California. However, -Sir 'Frisco never o'neo got to the front. When a couples of furlongs had been covered he was struggling in the centre of the field and he was unable to get through until well in tho straight, when Hatch pulled him on to tho outside and then, after a desperate effort to catch the leaders, tho San Francisco horse ran into third place, a length behind Bollin and Merrie Zealand. California fared even worse; he lost several lengths at the start and though, ridden hard the wholo way he could only get fourth. Bollin's win was full of merit because, in tho first furlong,' there wore half a dozen candidates in front of and around him and even five furlongs from home Merrie Zealand must , have been a couple of lengths ahead of him. F. D. Jones rode a fine race on the winner, from barrier to winning post. Ho made , up his ground very gradually and in the last furlong he completely outgenerallod the jockey on Merrie Zealand. St. Felix showed plenty of pace in tho first half mile, but was not among the 'first six at the finish'. Penates, too, failed after half the distance had been covered. North East, who prefers the hard going, never looked like a winner, nor did Ngapuka. Moloch, as generally expected, was last. Although there wero a dozen starters in the. Winter Hurdles, Tauira, Paisano, and Mahuta were the only'candidates backed to any extent. There were really only, two that had any chance, viz., Paisano and Tauira. Paisano hit out very boldly in his preliminary, but lauira was walked round to the start. Paisano was first over the initial hurdle, but then Tauira took charge and led past the stand. While Paisano jumped as straight as possible, Tauira was inclined to run out as he approached each jump, and at. the fifth fence ho lost enough ground to let Paisano head him on the rails. The race was over then, for though Tauira made strenuous efforts to overtake his redoubtable rival, they were unavailing, and Paisano ran in an easy winner by two lengths. Paritntu was going well in third place sis furlongs from home, when he hit a hurdle, and thence onwards ho showed loss pace and more care. Mahuta fell after going six furlongs, and Lionheart came to grief at, the second to last ■ fence. C. Price, rider of Lionheart, had his shoulder badly bruised. In the Trial Plate, Morecambe, a full-brother to Kairoma, was made the hottest favourite of the day. He was in front after they had gone a few strides, and was never afterwards headed. Tawhaki, who has yet to win a race, finished strongly after being badly -placed in the early stages, and just got up in' time to secure second place from Kilostere, a promising two-year-old by Kilcheran. Turna (by Stepniak),. who;was next to Morecambe for the first three furlongs, finished fourth. In the, concluding event the wholo of the eighteen acceptors .went, to tho post. The race resulted in an easy win for Contendent, who was a slightly better favourite on the machine than Stourton. The latter ran disappointingly and was only a poor third. Fighting Maid bolted while doing her preliminary, and galloped over a mile bofore being got in hand. Penalties -for tho Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting have been incurred by winners on Saturday as follow:—Winter Cup; Electrakoff, 7st., lOst.; Grand National Hurdles: Paisano, maximum, 12st. lib.; White Cockade, 51b., 9st. 51b.. .
