LACROSSE.
(Bj "Centre.")
The concluding match of the third round was completed last Saturday, leaving the positions of the various clubs unaltered. Capitol proved too strong for the men of the red shirts—Wellington—although prior to tho indisposition of Ryder—Wellington's centre—who was compelled to retire after about ten minutes' play, the match promised to be very evenly contested. ' This loss proved a severe handicap to tho club, but, notwithstanding, they put up a plucky-fight against tlie strong battery of Capitol. Wo may expect to'hear great, things from the Reds era long. Their team is improving, and the introduction of new members from other parts: is likely to place them w;ll up near the front i before the season oloses. The Capitol..men played well together, both in tho forward end back divisions, and merited their.win by 13 goals to 3. At the Basin Reserve, Kelburne succeeded in turning the tables on Columbia, who previously defeated the men of the'hills. The match proved to be clean and in teresling from Un> word "go," Columbia using all their pace and Kelburne calling into play all their strategy. Combined play won the day, although at one stage it seemed as if Columbia had succeeded in throwing the back division of the Blues into utter confusion. They rallied, however, and pulled off a ■ victory by 12 goals to 5. To-day, if the' weather permits, the two leading clubs in the competition for the Proud Cup will meet at the Basin Reserve. Both clubs are 'putting their best available teams into the field, and the match should prove intensely exciting. At Duppa -Street, Columbia meets Wellington, and a weU-contested game Is expected. In the last round these clubs played « draw, but whilst Columbia will probably have their full strength, Wellington are to be without the services of. Robinson their skipper— wlio has sustained an injury which necessitates a restAfter to-day's games the teams to take part 'in next Saturday's trial match are to be chosen by the selectors appointed by the association. ' "Centre" expresses tho hope that, the young candidates for representative honours will lie. . given every chance of getting places in the teams. .The association have provided for two grounds at Duppa Street, and whilst the twenty-four "possible" representatives are trying conclusions on one ground another twenty-four players will bo engaged on the other.
