NOTES AND COMMENTS. '
(BY QIiENCOE.)
Nearly all. the horses''that are to race at Trciitham to-day were on tho oburso yesterday morning. Many of them were extended over six furlongs and half a milo on the trial gallop, but as tho going was very heavy tho times recorded wero in all. cases-moderate. California, who did' half-paco work, greatly pleased the "track watchers. Ho has greatly improved since, ho won at> Otaki last.month. Sir Frisco and Tiptoe, who.arrived on Thursday evening, both moved resolutely. An interesting, point in. connection with tho Parliamentary Handicap will bo tho meeting of California, Sir Frisco, and Mcrrio Zealand, as tho trio were engaged in tho \Vmter Oats Handicap-at tho same meeting two years ago. -Each was solidly backed, and California won, while tho other two weru unplaced. .. Very littlo has been seen of Morrio Zealand on the tracks during the week, but ho is reported to bo as well as whom ho won tho Pcarco Handicap at Trentliam last sprang'. ; ' '■ -'-- : Excepting Loch Fyne, To Arai;. an<l Corazoh, all t\w horses that accepted in tho Wellington "Steeplechase have arrived at Trent-ham. Nero shaped at-
tractively on tlio flat yesterday morning, while Audax surprised tlio onlookers by tho.manner in which ho acquitted himself over a round of tlio big fences. Ho was again la-mo on. pulling up. ■ It is stated that To Arai will bo taken straight through'-from-Gisborno-to Ricearton by'steamer next week. Up till tost night ho Jiad not.beon withdrawn from his '.'Wellington - engagements. .-...,. Loch Fyno and.Kremlin-.wero yesterday' -withdrawn'.from "their-first day's engagements at the Wellington' Racing Club's meeting.".Longiier was scratched for. all engagements at tho.samo fixture. 'Loch Fyno and Kremlin will probably., bo .brought' to Trentham for tho'second-and'third days' racing. 'Mr. ]3. Coylejiiu been reappointed ■handicapper-to'the"Poverty Bay Turf Ofeb. ■■.': '/ In addition to. riding Sir Frisco in tho Parliamentary Handicap to-day, R. Hatch will have tho mpunt on Royal Marino- ■ (Stewards' Handicap), Teotane (Miramar Handicap), Merry Frank (Trial Plate), and Rongomai (To Aro Handicap). ■ - W. Young will ride North East, Paisano, and Grand Jowel, in their engagements. F. D. Jones will pilqt Elfish, Bollui, Morecambe, and Contendent in different races. .-.'"■ Mr. H. M'Manaway arrived in Wellington yesterday to see North East and Mahuta compete at Trentham today. .Mr.-C, O'Connor, Wellington Racing Club's starter,. arrived from Auokland yesterday afternoon. ■ Grenfell, who won the-Kcilor Hurdles on the second day of the VictoriaRacing Club's Grand National Meeting,, has now won five jumping events in six starts. Tho Awapuui trainer, G. Price, who airived from Sydney yesterday, has just received an interesting letter from L. H. Hewitt," who has' been riding in Austria for. the past, conjjjo of seasons. At the time tho letter- was written Hewitt' was at tho head.of the list of winning' jockeys in Austria, having two wins movo than the Victorian, B.Carsllake. Hewitt's victories included five of tho principal races in that country. If he can spare the necessary time, he intends to■ piy a visit'.to Sydney next Christmas; He planne'd'.a trip last year, hut was unable- 1o" c'arry"it" cut.
