The Chinese- pirates who stormed and captured a Portuguese' military post in the small island of Colowan (forming part of the Portuguese colony of Ma° cao), despite the cannonading, of a Portuguese gunboat,, were subsequently dislodged by the fire from a Portuguese cruiser and gunboat. , Two junfcloads of pirates, who were attempting to escape, were all drowned. The .Chinese Government has stationed a gunboat .and 1220 soldiers in the vicinity of Colowan, and is awaiting developments. / .. The .Governor of Macao has also sent guns, and 200 infantry to Colowan. .■„ .Tho: incident has arisen because of rival Portuguese and Chinese claims to the island. Recent negotiations in Peking failed.
