PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
— -» . . (By Telegraph-Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, July 15. .The Opera House was crowded last night, when tho Palmerston Brass Band gave a concert in aid of its funds. Tho programme comprised items by tho band itself ■ (which, has wonderfully improved in the last couple of months), the Palmerston Licdertafel, Miss Ellen Millar, and Mr.,J. Rogers. The whole of tho performers received encores, tho solo numbers of 'Miss Millar, who has, a pleasing contralto voice, being especially appreciated. . Several of tho items by the band were also redemanded, a similar compliment being paid to the Licdertafel. During the evening, Mr. W. Park, president ol the band, explained the means abgut' to be adopted to place tho band on a sound footing, financially and otherwise. Ho also announced '- that the next North Island band contest would be held in i■Palmerston, tho necessary guarantee of £550 being forthcoming. Purple-. Stat Orange Lodge held its fortnightly mooting last night, W.M. Bro. Jackson in tho chair. Four new members were proposed for initiation. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the Salvation, Army Band for. its services last Sunday, when-the lodge held an open meeting, and : tqj Adjutant Hayward for the use of the Barracks for the meeting. It was resolved to hold an.open night at Feilding next Wednesday. The practices of the children who areto; take, part in the fancy dress ball, which is being organised by Mrs. w. T; Wood in'.- aid" of the proposed Old Men's Home fund, are being very well, attended. The 'ball promises' to be a great success. .',,'■ ■ A lecture was given by Dr. Stowo last evening. to the nursing division of St. John' Ambulance Association, tho subject being v '''Hemorrhages and tho Means' to-be Taken for their Suppression." A number of members of the Fire Brigade Ambulance Division were also- present. ■ The Friendly Societies' Council met last night. The question'of establishing a friendly societies' dispensary was discussed at length, and a special committee was appointed to go into tho matter fully, .and report to next meeting. The Poxton Lodgo of Oddfellows .intimated, that it- intended to seccdo from the council, regret being expressed at its-withdrawal. Bro. A. A. Pratt was elected to fill the vacancy on the council caused by the withdrawal of tho Foxton delegate. An interesting lecture -on . the work of the- Ramabai Mission in India was given ■ in St. Andrew's Hall last night by Miss M'Grogor, but owing, to tho very inclement weather there was only a small attendance. Tho wrestling matches arranged for last night between Bain and Can-oil did not tako place, the audience not being large enough to warrant tho wrestlers oxertiiig themselves. . '' A cadet corps has been formed in connection with the local Technical School, with Mr. H. It. Whalley as captain. Tho coinpiuijr [a already over fifty strong, and as it includes in its ranks many ex-pnblio cadets, it should quickly become an efficient corps. Mr. Whalley is an enthusiast so far as the boys are concerned. It was he who first established the Box Scouts in Palnier-'-stall,
