ENGINEERS' INSTITUTE.
■ -* —— THE ANNUAL MEETING. The animal meeting of tlics institute of Engineers,' hold on Wednesday, was presided over by i\lr. J. Darling, the retiring presidont. The committee stated in their report that the year had. bean a very important one from the fact that the institute had undertaken the creetion of new premises in Mulgrave Street. These were now completed at a total cost, including furnishing of .£7500. The rooms are thrown open to ofii&rs of vessels visiting the port who are usually admitted to tlie privileges of membership during their stay. The membership of the society now totals 779, an increase of 72 having been made during the past yeur. Good reports have been received of a number of young members who have gone home, from Mr. Denny, of Dumbarton, and from Messrs. W. L. Marshall, and J. Adamsoil, • secretaries of engineering organisations in Great Britain. By the loss of the Duco the institute lost two members to whose relatives condolenco and tangible assistance had been extended. Sympathy was also extended to the owners of the Duco and the owners of the Lauderdale in their losses, and to a number of other associates and members who have lost relatives during the year. The library had been added to very considerably during the past year. A very valuable donation was received' from Mr. John Cook, of tho ijrm of Sfevenson and Cook, of Port Chalmers, who' donated .£SO towards the purchase of technical works! Thanlts were also extended to the British (Juiporation for a copy of its transactions and register. A number of other donations were suitably acknowledged. To Mr. Frank Reddaway, of Manchester, the institute was indebted for a handsome statue and light bracket and to Mrs. W. Gardener, of Port Chalmers, for a barometer. Appreciation is expressed in the report of the services of Mr. J. Wisliart, of the Kotare, and of Mr. J. Weir, of tho ICoi. Reference is made to thefact that a splendid offer of a superannuation scheme, made by Sir .Tames Mills to the ongineerh, was not accepted. The committee express the opinion that thoso who refused the offer will ■regret their action in the near future. The various branches of the institute throughout tho Dominion are reported to be in a flourishing condition. Trade in the main has been rather slow in Now Zealand during the year, and engineering lias suffered perhaps more than other branches, but it is felt, in engineering circles, that things are taking a turn and a better feeling obtains than for some time past. A mutual provident' scheme was started during the past year and will be pushed along.(luring the year now opened. The following office-bearers were elected: —President, Mr. T. R.
