DISCOLOURED WATER SUPPLY. MEN'S FREE SOCJIAL CLUB. iFrom Our BpcciaJ. Correspondent.! Palmerston North, July 13. A meeting in connection with the Men's I'ree Club, which is being organised by Miss Gleiidinning, was held yesterday afternoon, Captain Haydon in the chair. It was decided to open the club on ,Saturday morning. ' Tile following comm'ittoe was appointed to carry on the club:—Messrs. .1. A. Nash (Mayor),' W. l'\ Dunvard. E. Hampton, G. "([. Bennett, 11. Haydon, E. li. Whallev, J.' Cunlimghame, A. E. Clausen, and" Adjutant llaywai'd (Salvation Army). Miss Glendinning was appointed secretary and treasurer.' ' At the adjourned meeting of .the Borough Council last night, the engineer brought up a report in connection .with' the water supply, the muddy state of which, has been the cause of some complaint of late. The water run;: straight ' from the stream into the service pipes, and in stormy weather when tliera is a Hoot!-, it becomes discoloured. The engineer stated that-the only remedies were the provision of filter beds or mechanical filtration.' Owing to the configuration of the country, the first-named remedy wa3 out of the question, leaving only • mechanical filtration, which - ho estimated, would cost about .£.IOOO. On several occasions lately 'the water coming from taps in several localities has been almost black, but it is peculiar that while this is so in come streets, yet at exactly tho sanio. time it is beautifully clear iii, others. No explanation of this peculiarity has as yet been forthcoming. Housewives who have to use the. water in its muddy state are inclined to complain to the council, but the fault, perhaps, lies with the ratepayers themselves, who have refused to sanction loans for the improvement of the water service. It is anticipated that with the very large extra quantity of water that is now*, being used in the, borough, especially in connection with the sewage service, the raising of the dam to provide ample storngo. will become an absolute necessity next summer. At a meeting of the Palmerston Holiday Association to-day, Mr. G. H. Bennett (chairman) presiding, it was decided not to observe'-a. whole holiday on. Arbor Day, as •i t was. considered that all the trees could be attended to in the afternoon, the! day being the 'statutory haifhohday. The resignation of Mr.- G. E. Dempsey, as a of the Executive,, was accepted with, regret, as he had been v ymember .of the association. Mr. I'. Watson was elected to fill the vacancy. It was resolved to call for applications • for the position of nightwatchman in the Square to fill. the vacancy caused by the resignation of the present watchman after 30 years' service. The association also decided to support the movement for the abolition of the bookmaker, as it was considered that an increase in gambling was bad for the interests of business people. A report submitted to the Executive Committee of the District Nurse Society showed that J220 had been raised as thenet result of the concert recently nised by Mrs. W. T. Wood. The street collections on June 22 totalled £92 10s. 6d. . Hearty votes of thanks iter® accorded Mrs. J. A. Nash (Mayoress) and Mrs. W. T. Wood for the • assistance which they had rendered, in connection .•with the street collections'and . the con-' cert respectively. .The report of. the nurse stated that, during June. 112. visits had been paid, to patients. Tii*> births were reported, and three patients 'had been discharged as cured. -■ •
