ONSLOW BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Onslow Borough Council, held lost evening, was attended by the Mayor (Mr. J. G. Harkncss), and Councillors D. A. Bannister, C. Aplin, junr., E. S. Stafford, TV. R. Himmer, 15. Lynneberg, G. W. Darvall, and AV. H. Bowden. The council expressed its sympathy with Councillor Hernan and his family in their recent sad bereavement. A deputation of Khandallah ratepayers waited upon the council with a request that it form a length of roadway between Izard Street and Mona Crescent Mr. C. C. Crump, speaking for tho deputation, said the road asked for was verv necessary. A big area of ground was locked ui>, and the right-of-way now in uso was "impassable, in this weather, to far as women were concerned. The council got about £S0 a year in rates from tho district concerned. There would be no hardship in taking the land required, as tho value of the property affected would be Increased by the formation of tho road. Another member of the deputation said this right-of-way was only 133 feet long, and it was under water at the present time, The Jlayor replied that the council was in sympathy with the deputation, and recognised the importance of its request, and that the work asked for would be u benefit to the whole of the borough. As it was. only a right-of-way, the council was debarred from improving it. As to a roadway, lis did not think permanent improvements of this nature should l>e paid for out of rates. It was much better that the ratepayers should vote for si loan of snecifio amount. Mr. Crump said the longer the question stood the more expensive it would be in the end for the borough. At present it might cost the eotmeil approximately .£IOO to obtain tho necessary land. The" .Mayor promised that the council would give the matter its earnest consideration, and the deputation withdrew. It was agreed (hat the remainder of tho loan in connection with the catchment area be placed on fixed deposit for a period of sis months. No action was, taken in connection with the proposals in reference to reticulating the Onslow boroigh with gas-mains, and it was agreed that the matter lie deferred pending the possibility of other districts combining with Onslow to obtain a gas .service. It was agreed, on the recommendation, of the Sanitation, Lighting, and Works Committee, that' Councillors Ferguson, Anliu, Kiernan, and Darvill be a committee to consider where it would be advisable to place additional electric lights in the borough, and report to the next meeting of the council.
