TWO DEPARTMENTS.
INDIGNANT FARMERS. The Farmers' Union Dominion Confer* cnce last nigit registered its protest against the methods employed by the State Fire Insurance Department, in endeavouring to obtain the insurances of the mortgagors to tho Government Advances to Settlors Department. Remits to this eliect were received from six provincial branches, but the discussion was taken on the Auckland one. which was moved by Major Lust, as follows:— That this conference protests against the methods adopted by the Government State Eire Insurance Department, iu making u=e of confidential inlormation for the extension of its business. Mr. E. Maxwell (Opunake) said considerable indignation was felt on this matter among larmars in TaranaUi. They considered that the Fire Insurance Department was making use ot confidential information, and not only at headquarters, but country branches also were supplied with the information. The farmers also feared that if they came into nouliict with one Department of the State, they might be made to suffer through another—trouble might l>o made about noxious weeds, for instance. He did not share that fear, but it was felt by many. Another point was that some other offices had been compelled by some peculiar means to refuse to renew insurances. The premium charged by the Farmers' Mutual was less than that charged by the State, yot farmers were compelled to pay the higher premium. After a short discussion the motion was carried..
