GOVERNMENT. WHIPS. Mil. .LATJR.ENSON'S RETIREMENT. Tho Prime Minister announced, with regret, in ■ the- 'House yesterday afternoon, that Mr. George Laurenson, .owing toill-health.'found it necessary to resign the position. of Senior. Government I ']?- Ho was.suro that Mr. Laurenson would 'have the! sympathy of the whole House in respect of the cause of.his retirement. ;Mr. Laurenson, as a man, had the respect and esteem of all parties in the House, and they an hoped that the relief from strain which the resignation of ■ this.' office would afford him, might restore him to good' health. He waVrtadto find, that Mr. Laurensoji's health was already showing great improvement. - Mr. Ell (Christchurch South) would become Senior and Mr. Macdonald (Bay of Plenty) Junior Whip. ' He wished the new Whips the greatest possible success in their- difficult positions: Mr. Massey stated that Opposition members regretted cxceedinglj the necessity for Mr. Laurenson's retirement, and congratulated Messrs. Ell and Macdonald on their appointments. Ho felt suro that they would carry out theirduties in a manner that would r.ot only be satisfactory to' their own side, but a credit to Parliament.
