The early south express was delayed forty minutes a mile north of Temuka, through a mishap to the driving gear of the engine. Temporary .repairs were effected. The engine is of Class A, exhibited at the Cliristchurch Exhibition.
ENCINEERINC DISPUTE
, Christohurch, July 12. • In the engineering dispute' before the' Conciliation: Council, the parties agreed to a. minimum rate, of wages, competent tradesmen to be paid.ls. 4Jd: per. hour thus bringing the Christohurch rate on a level with the, rate in other centres. Ihe remaining. demands'were agreed to, and ; an industrial agreement is to be entered into for a period of two years.
GOVERNMENT CRANTS,
Walroa, July 12. Tho Government lias notified' the "VVairoa County Council that, a grant has been made of £2100 towards general work on.account of roads damaged by the Easter floods. The Government will also, take sole responsibility in tho re-erection of the Nuhaka Bridge: This is in addition to a' grant of £1000 for the "Waikaremoana Koad.
FLOODS ANTICIPATED
Christohurch, July 12. Heavy rain from the' south-east and south-west has fallen, generally. The fall in the city, last 'night was an inch and a quarter. There lias been much snow in the back, country, and it is anticipated all the . Canterbury rivers will be heavily flooded.
RELICION IN STATE-SCHOOLS,
Dunedin, July 12. At a meeting-.of the. Presbytery today, a motion was .carried approving of tho general ..principle of • the New South. Wales system of teaching religion in. State schools, and expressing willingness to. meet the Anglican Church in conference on the subject. A committee of nine was appointed to represent tho Presbytery at the conference
