At the meeting of the Wellington Presbytery, yesterday, it was resolved "to present to His Excellency the Governor (Lord Islington) a" congratulatory address oi welcome,, a sub-committee leing appointed to give effect to the resolution.
Private advice received from London "by the English mail received on Monday states that Mrs. M'Arthur, wife of Dr. M'Arthur. S.M., continues to improve in health.
Mr. Geo. N. Goldie, who has proved a very energetic and capable'secretary of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, has resigned that position owing to ill-health. Mr. G. A.. Harley las been • appointed secretary pro tern. Mr. Goldje • has been called to Duh•ediu owing to the illness of his father.
Mr. E. W. Burton, solicitor, ot Auckland, arrived in Wellington by the Main Trunk express yesterday for the purpose, of attending the.sittings of the Court; of Appeal.
The Rev. W. Gray Dixon, of ; Auckland, has accepted the call to, tho Roslyn Presbyterian Church, Dunedin.— Press. Association.
Mr. H. Symons, of'tho Auckland office of' the Public Health' Department, las been elected president of the Auckland branch of the Civil Service Association for the ensuing year.' ■
Miss Baldwin Warn and Miss D. Durrant, English artists of repute, have arrived in Auckland after touring the Dominion. Miss Warn has exhibited in the Roval Academy in England, also in the Paris Salon. Her'work is wellknown in New Zealand.
The latest mail from Sydney brings news of a new theatrical partnership for the production of high-class plays. The names linked in the new proprietary are Messrs. Harry Plimmer, Reynolds Denniston (both of New Zealand), and Mr. Allan Hamilton. . They have secured the rights of Clyde Fitch's most popular play "Lover's Lane," and aro to commence a tour of New Zealand in September.
Mr. John Buchanan, an old resident of Auckland died at the age of 87 years on Friday last. Deceased, when a young man, migrated.to Sydney, from which city he eame to Auckland in 1355. For' over 40 years he represented the Liverpool and London and Globe Insurance Company, and was for . a number of years tho local agent for Router's Telegram Company, Ltd., and the Colonial Sugar Company of Sydney. He was also a trustee of the Auckland Savings Bank, but resigned on being appointed inspector of accounts at that bank, which position he held until his retirement from business, some 15 years ago.
The Rev. C. ft l'orter, who has been fifteen years in the Wesleyan Methodist ministry and who was stationed at Christchurch, Wellington, and other important centres before coming to Masterton has (says our Masterton correspondent) resigned from the ministry owing to his being opposed to the itinerant system of tho Methodist Church.
Our Wangahui correspondent telegraphs:—Mr. G. H. Dickson, engineer to the Waitotara County Council, has found himself unable to accept the position of supervising ongineer-to the Castlecliff Town Board. Tho latter body has, consequently, to begin the search for a supervising engineer do novo.
