SERVANT GIRL PROBLEM.

Sir,—Will j-ou kindly allow me space to comment a little on the alxtvc, this vexed question of lite present day. it is bv no means an easy task to obtain the rjghi kind of girls as servants in the laxanaki district, except by a fluke. Thev are too hard to please, and for this Teason there are numerous places offering, and very few here to embrace the opportunity of accepting, notwithstanding "tlui fact that tho mistresses are almost in every na.se good, kind, considerate, and often generous, lx>rdering in many instances almost to extravagance, in "order to mako a servant's quarters as homelike as possible. In spite of all this they cannot get suited, 110 matter what inducements are held forth. Now, 3lr. Editor, I am of opinion if there were about fifty girls out of work in or about Wellington, they could easily bo placed here. I mean girls of the domestic type, not afraid of a bit of to.il, and who would be rewarded by receiving liberal wages. Hind, sir, i am leaving cowspanking ont of it altogether. Locally, tho*i offering have in most cases their homes here; or, rather, their parents, therefore they can afford to pick and choose, and carc very little for work of any description. Their whole ambition is to try and get someone to keep them thumping at a piano tlio whole day lone, discordant or otherwise. If there are any girls on the market, I do not. mean the matrimonial market, for that comes sooner or later to a good girl, but. I mean the domestic market, they would do well by coming up in this direction, and I am confident would have no difficulty in obtaining places, in addi* Hon to good wages. Hoping you Trill kindly allow me this space in your valued paper, and apologising for using so much of it.—l am, etc.. PRO BONO PUBLICO. New Plymouth, July 11, 1910.
