London, July 11. Sir George Reid, High Commissioner'for Australia, speaking in support of the Liioboat Fund at Leeds, deprecated the tendency to look askauco at the- progress of other nations. He also urged the need of modernising education and teaching tho young some fow of the things they needed in the battle of life.
SEINE STILL RISING. Paris, July 10. Thero has been a further alarming rise of the Seine. VESUVIUS ACTIVE. Rome, Jnly 10. Mount Vesuvius is in eruption. Ashes are falling on the village of San Guiseppe and Ottajano Oft tho eastern slopes of the mountain. Later. Jlonnt Vesuvius is not in eruption. The disturbance is merely due to electric storms and gale* disturbing old ashes.
