THE GOVERNMENT AND THE PETONE NAVALS.
STATEMENT BY CAPTAIN ELLIS. The statement published yesterday as to the reasons which induced Captain Ellis to resign, the command of the Petono Nayais proves to Iμ incorrect. Captain Ellis desires us to N state that ho was in no way responsible for the statements made. The allegations, ho states, are not iounded on lact. The last annual encampment of the. corps was held in. Aoveinber last, and the Government remit lor the payment oi the supplies was received shortly after, and the amounts paid. As regards the capitation,' Captain Ellis said that the volunteer year ended on I'ebruary 28. The claim* for capitation was not sent in for some time after that. There was, therefore, some reason for tho iact that the money was not received till May. Upon subsequent inquiry at district headquarters, a representative of The Dosiixios was informed, with regard to the claim' for supplies at (he company's encampment, that the application was made on November 22, and the claim duly certified, audited, and paid by Decomber 10.
So far as the reporter was ablo to ascertain, from inquiries made in. other directions, there appears to have loan some delay with regard to the-award of eervice medals to members of the company entitled' to receive them. Further inquiry, however, is being made on this {joint.
