Mr. W. Law left last week on a visit to Australia.
Mr. G. W. Phipps, caterer at the Miranui flaxmill, departed for the Zambesi last week to witness tho Barry-Arnst con lest.
Tho local junior football team was defeated by Tainui at Oi-aki oil Saturday by 11 poiats'to 3. Tho spoil of wet weather experienced lately has not tended to improve the approach to the railway station, and tho unwary traveller, who alights from any of the evening trains to plunge into the Cimmerian darkness of the station yard, runs a great risk of obtaining wet feet and an erroneous impression of the town, by reason of the large and promiscuous puddles, (ho property of the Now Zealand Rail-ways. A few loads of metal would put matters right, and help to dispel the impression that Shannon is ordinarily under water.
Mr. G, N. Stephenson has recently been on a visit to the thermal district.
A petition, signed by Messrs. H. Lambert, G. Bee, 0. P. Pederscn, J. W. Batchelar, F. A. Staples, R. Staines, and Mary Roots, -was presented to .the Horowheniia County Council on Saturday. Petitioners complained of the state of tho Tokomaru Vnlley Road, and made allegations respecting who was to blame. Councillor Venn said that the road was in a most dangerous condition. Some day somebody would meet with very serious .injury unless some alteration was made, and then sue the council for damages. It tras resolved to interview the Shannon Timber Company on tho matter.
