ROWING.

SYD. KEMP V. 808 HOPPING. On Saturday, July 2, Syd. Kemp, of Abhotsford, son of ex-champion Peter Kemp, met and defeated Bod Hopping, of tho Tramway Department, after a very hard contest. Tho raco was rowed in heavy fixed-seated skiffs from Poter Komp's boat-shed lit Abbotsford, over a course from tho Gasworks Beacon to Searle's monument, on tho Parraniiitta River, a distance of a little over n milo and a half, for stakes of £iO (says the "Iteferee"). The tide was full, and a strong westerly dead astern. Beach gave tho men the usual warning against fouling, and they were quickly away, with Hopping getting, if anything, a little the better of thi/ start. Both men rowed desperately hard for a lead, aud ,'i.ftor tho first 3D strokes the men were oil even tonus; but after a quarter of a mile's rowing Hopping led his younger opponent, by three-quarters of a length. Kemp shortly afterwards dipped them in hard, and in a couple of dozen strokes drew level. Here it looked as if Kemp would win. He was rowing a free, easy stroke, with good length and power. Hopping was rowing a much quicker stroke. The next half mile was pretty rowing; tho men were locked together, first one and then tho other gaining a slight advantage. Hopping was still rowing much tho faster stroko, and at Cabarita had three-quarters! of a length lead from Kemp, who was rowing well. Kemp again got on even terms, and neariug Gladesville he just got the nose of his boat in front; at Gladesville Hopping again crept up, and a littlo later led by a length. A see-saw race ensued to One Man Wharf (1J miles), where Kemp was seen to load by half a length. Straight across tho river, Kemp gained a length, and at Henley a length and a half separated tho boats. Hopping raced desperately hard to tho finish, aud was clean pulled out, being beaten by just a length, after about \i\ minutes' rowing.
