THE FLOW OF POPULATION.
SOME IMPORTANT FIGURES. HOW NEW ZEALAND IS FAKING. Tho iigures quoted in the House by Mr. Buchanan, M.P., on Friday, with referenco to the ebb and How 01 population are tho subject of a good deal of comment. It will be remembered that tho point which the member for Wairarapa made was that the departures were this year greatly exceeding the arrivals. Tho Hon. p. Buddo.Jn reply, declared that the discrepancy need occasion no alarm, as at this period of tho year largo numbers of workers went to Australia for the slaughtering season, returning to New Zealand at the end of tho year. That tho position is much more unsatisfactory than tho Minister mado it appear will, however, be seen from the undermentioned ligures, which aro gleaned from the official returns. In J'JOS the Dominion gained in population to tho extent of 11,201, owing to the arrivals exceeding departures. Of this incrcaso 2885 occurred during the first five months of the year. The increase as a result of the flow of population in 11)00 was, however, only 4710, but still tho initial fivo months of tho year more than held their own, as there was a surplus of arrivals over departures of $<>0. From the latest figures available for this year, viz., up till the end of May last, tho departures have exceeded the arrivals every month, with tho exception of January, the result being that the Dominion has so far this yeat lost 2375 in population.
