HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

1 The fortnightly meeting of.tho Lowef Hutt Borough Council was held last evening. In the absence of Mr. C. P. Bunny, 'the Mayor, the Deputy-Mayor, Councillor H. Baldwin, occupied the chair. Other members • present were:—Councillors Maeaskill, Barlow, Hayes, Kempthorno, Pearce, Hawthorn, Anson, and Clere. Miss Pye^again wrote in reference to her claim for compensation, and drew tho council's attention to the fact that' when her claim was last, considered there was: not a full meeting of the council. It was resolved, on tho motion of Councillor Pearce, that the council adhere to its previous offer. Mr. Hnggins complained that, when passing the local Drill Hall in Victoria Street, he had tripped over some planks lying across the footpath. The council dccided that they had no power to act. .Mr. Sanderson and Mr. Murison drew attention to the state of an opon drain between Epuni and Pretoria Streets, and requested the council to cover it in. The clerk was instructed to make inquiries as to whether the drain belonged to tho council or to a private owner. The council agreed to a petition signed by 10 residents, who asked that the name of Camp Koad be altered to Jlellings Street. Mr. J. Wright applied for an estension of time for conncoting up his premises at Alicetown with the sewerage drain. The application was granted. In answer to a letter by the town clerk in reference to tho High School site, the Minister for Education wrote referringthe council to the Wellington Education Board. Councillor Welch, representing the Ifutt County Council, asked tho council to fulfil their promise of :-oiuo months ago in reference to tho deepening of a drain 011 the back Waiwetu Road. Tho engineor was instructed to prooeod with tho work .at once. On the motion of Councillor Clero, it was resolved to forward a strong letter to the Petone Borough Council complaining of a nuisance caused by gas fumes, and requesting them to remedy same. The engineer reported that tho work at Everest Creek was proceeding satisfactorily, 17 chains of the culvert going westward having been completed, and the earthwork excavated to the junction with tho culvert crossing the Main Eoad (Hutt). Ten connections with water mains, (making a total of 50fi) had been mado to date. The gas services had been increased by three. The cleaning of roads and footpaths on the Willoughby Knight Estate had been completed, and the preparation of the footpaths in Alicetown. for tarring was in hand. Repairs wore boing mado to the Main Hntt Road. The clcan tng of Park Avonue had boon completed.
