FIRE ON THE INDRADEVI.
NO CONCLUSIVE EVIDENCE AS TO CAUSE.
(Br TeleEranh-Press Association.! Auckland, July 9. The Nautical Court of Inquiry into the cause or the nre on tne steamer indraueii gave its decision tins morni,,.r It iouiid there was evidence of neglect or wroi'.giul act on the part of tdie master, oßicers, or crew, or the men employed in discharging, and no conclusive evidence of the cause of tho lire, 'ihe cargo destroyed or damaged was not of a nature suggesting spontaneous ignition. Its inaccessibility rendered improbable its ignition by sparks or by anyone gaining access to that part of the hold. The position of the oil and paint locker, with the tanks containing various oils, including raw iinswd oil, immediately above the seat of the fire, points to the possibility of o3 having locked through tho deck into the charcoal insulation, and there generated by oxidation sufficient heat to cause ignition. Whether or not this was the cause of the fire, the Court was of opinion that so combustible a substance as charcoal should not be used for insulating tho holds of ships.
