SMOKE WITHOUT FIRE.
GOVERNMENT THREATS AMUSE AUCKLAND. (By Te)err<»i>n.—Sperial Oorrojoondent.v Auckland, July 9. Tho recant contest for tho Auckland Ease seat Las had an interesting sequel. It is a "weli-iiiKMvn fact that upon juue Id very few of the shops in the electorate were closed, 'lhe many shopkeepers who kept their places of business open on mat day have now been notified by the Labour Department that in continuing business on _ tho afternoon in question they committed, an offence rendeiuig themselves liable to prosecution. The letter concludes by advising the shopkeepers that on the repetition of such conduct they will be prosecuted without further notice. The notification has been received with not a little amusement in several cases. One gentleman laughingly remarked that the whole tiling was a farce. "Let them prosecute," he said; "while the Act provides that tho shops shall close it does not stipulate any penalty, so it seems that or.e can go on repeating the oifence without being penalised. Anyway, I invite the Department to do 'its worst, and if I have committed an offence I would like to know what right tho Department has to condone it."
