LODGE MEETING,

SOUTHERN CROSS ODDFELLOWS

The installation meeting of the Southern Cross Lodge of Oddfellows was held on Thursday evening, l at the Masonic Hall, Boulcott Street. There was a large attendance of members. In the ordinary business of the lodge, at which Bro. L. Bodley, N.G., presided, a report of a committee was read, recommending that the unapplied portion of the benevolent fuiid interest should be drawn upon for the management fund, which at present is in crcdit, but jn a few years' time may be overdrawn. This proposal was dissented from, in some quarters, and on the motion of Bro. Meadowcroft, P.G., consideration was deferred for a month. A delegation of Grand Lodge officers, consisting of Bro. A. 11. ' Valentine (Dunedin), G.W.; Acting-District Grand Master; Bro. F. "Wills, P.G.M., Acting-Grand Warden, Bro. H. H. Coote, P.G., Grand Secretary; and Bro. \V. Nash, P.G., Grand Marshal, then took charge'of the proceedings, and installed tho following oflicers. N.G., Bro. M. Tracy; V.G., Bro. A. Bodley; U.S., Bro. D. M'Gillivray; P.S., 13ro. F. J. Evans'; treasurer, Bro. It. J. Clark. After the installation, the Grand . Warden (Bro. Valentine), who has lately made a tour of the Dominion, delivered an interesting address on the objects of Oddfellowship, and spoko hopefully of the prospects of the Order. At Napier thero had lately been a large accession of members, and in Dunedin during tho last few months two--new lodges had been formed, making a total of nine working lodges in the southern city. The friendly societies dispensary in Dunedin, in which the Oddfellows were largely interested, had been so successful that with the profits the managers iiad bought a suburban section, on which they wero about to erect a convalescent home for members. Arrangements had been made, too, with the Dunedin Hospital by which twelve beds were to be at the disposal of the societies in case of need. ■ The speaker expressed a hope that tlie members of the Order in the capital would . fellow the example of their brethren in the south.
