THE CHURCHES.

NEW BAPTIST CHURCH ' BROOKLYN. The rapid growth of the hill-top sub* urb of Brooklyn is ■ evidenced by the fine new Baptist Church which is-to bo opened for worship to-morrow. Tho building of Gothic design occupies a commanding position on a site adjoining the old church on the Ohiro Road Terrace. The main .entrance is approached' by a broad flight of circular concrete steps. Tho church is entered tlirough a vestibule, and class-rooms, which are divided from tho auditorium by folding doors, and which when needed- can. be thrown into, tho auditorium. Vestries on each side of the platform 'aro similarly treated so that when occasion -requires, tho. ordinary seating accommodation of 300 can be'increased bv another 150. The floor has a fail of ; 18 inches towards the platform, giving' an uninterrupted view-of the preacher. The ceiling and walls aro lined with stamped steel in appropriate' design. The interior colour scheme is. very, pleasing. Tho ceiling is in eream, divided into square bays by heavy sv.eeps in sago green. Tiio. walls are it lighter shade of green, the. pilasters carrying the sweeps being in the darker shade?. The lead lights in tho front windows are most effective!. -The pews are oi kauri. The building is lighted by electricity throughout. The architect-was Mr. H. T. Johns, and the builder Mr. T. Cooke; Messrs. Briscoe and Co. fixed the steel on walls and ceilings; Messrs. Smith and Smith designed-the lead, lights; Mr. W. Nicol was the painter, and Mr. Horning the plumber. -The first services will be held to-mor-row when the Dev. Arthur Dewdney will preach in the morning on "The Church's Open Door," and in the evening on "Do we Need the Church Today?" l'n the afternoon Mr. 11. N. Holmes will conduct a united young people's service. A public tea meeting will be held on AVetmesday;

METHODISM. . The quarterly meeting of the Board of Management of the Taranaki Street Methodist Church, met., on Thursday' evening, thero being a large attendance of members presided over by'the Rev. S. J. Serpell, superintendent minister. After introducing and congratulating six new members to seats on the. board, elected at a church.meeting-.re-cently, Mr. Serpell spoke, hopefully of church work generally. The -circuit stewards presented a .satisfactory balr' ance-sht'ot tor ;tho quarter. Speciallygratifying remarks were " made at the' general progress of church work : at; Brooklyn and Karori. All the various departments of church ;work' are well : sustained. It was reported that Mr. '.I.'. E. Tayloi, M.l*., has consented to; deliver a lecture sometime during Au--. gust for tie benefit'of the church fund' on the "Autocrat of the Brealifast Table." It was decided to support the request from the_ Householders' League in regard to urging Parliament- to havea referendum of' the people taken in' reference to Bible-reading in the State schools. Tho following resolution was also unanimously agreed to: "That this quarterly meeting is in full'sympathy with the-remarks made recently by Mr. Justice Chapman with regard to the legislation affecting- bookmakers, and with thosu who are. working of the abolition of the same; and further, this quarterly meeting of Taranaki Street . Methodist Circuit heartily ap-' proves the object of the deputation which is to wait upon the Prime Minister with regard; to the abolition of the totalisator and bookmakers, and appoints the members of this meeting as delegates to the deputation." Itwas also resolved to request the Government to prohibit the-exhibition of moving pictures or lantern views of he pugilistic encounter between i.Teffriea and; Johnson through.,the Dominion.,;.
