CHEAP FARES.
AUSTRALIA TO LONDON. GERMAN COMPANY REDUCES RATES. By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyright. (Rcc. July 9, 0.10 a.m.) Sydney, July 8. Following yesterday's cable regarding tho cutting of passage rates to London, tho North German Lloyd Company has announced reductions commcncing on October 8, as follow: — First-class fares to London will he reduced to £6G single, and £99 return.
Second-class fares will bo reduced to £38 10s. single, and £57 15s. return.
The old" first-class rates were from £71 10s. to £80 10s. single, and £123 return, and the old seconcl-class single faro was from £41 16s. to £46 4s. Third-class rates are unaltered. Herr Heinoken, managing director of tho company, who is now in Australia, states that the Orient company, owing to a State subvention, is able to put on more modern vessels and thus capture the passenger trade. In the North Atlantic trade'the shipping companies are allowed to charge different rates according to tbe speed and comfort of the vessels. His company wanted only fair treatment. Herr Heineken considered it was only fair that, tho English companies should allow tho same differentiation in tbe rates between Europe and Australia as was allowed between Europe and America. Thero was nothing in the agreement between the shipping companies to prevent under-cutting the rates. The local representatives of the Orient and P. and 0. Companies state that they have no information on tho matter from headquarters.
