PROFESSIONAL BOXINQ.
CITY COUNCIL WILL HAVE NONE' OF IT. • Short shrift was given by the Wellington City Council yesterday afternoon to an application from the Wellington Boxing Association for permission to hold professional boxing contests at the Town Hall on July 29 next. Tho council waß not entirely unanimous with regard to the question of vetoing the "pugs," however, but the majority ruled., For the majority Councillor G. ' Shirtcliifo put the case in a nut-shell. He was not opposed to amateur boxing —far from it, but the experienco of tho recent Jeffries-Johnson - fight inAmerica should amply suffice, he said, to absolutely condemn professional boxing contests in New Zealand. (Hear, hear.)
An amendment by Councillor Fitzgerald that the matter be held over till the nest meeting of tho council was negatived, and the motion for the refusal of tho application carried..
