Mr. .Kai-jnes, a farmer, of Parry Sound; Ontario, has been .victimised 'while on a visit to London by two men, who obtained from him .£l2O. in. cash, notes, and bills of exchange by. means of.- the confidence trick. It appears that Mr. Karmes got into conversation with a stranger, by whom he was introduced to a third person. Tho-latter, had some scheme bv which his acquaintances. were to benefit, and asked them as a security to deposit with-him such sums of, money as they could muster. Mr. Karmes fell intq til? trap and handed over .£l2O, to "show confidence." . Tho ; confederates then disappeared.

When the value of the consumption of pipes, matches, etc.,. is added tho total tobacco bill may be put at <£21,2(i5,000. • It may be. pointed out, in- addition, that the present annual revenue derived from the taxation of ten bacco amounts to nearly .£16,000,000, ■ or about two-thirds of the total bill.
