HON. T. MACKENZIE SPEAKS , OUT.

IMPERIAL ASPECT OF THE QUESTION. Tho Hon. T. MACKENZIE (Minister for Agriculture) declared that Mr. M'Laren belonged to a coterie which held that the population of New Zealand was increasing at such a rate as to provide sufficient workers to carry on the work of tho Dominion. As a matter of fact the development in tho agricultural industry justified a much larger population than was hero. It would bo found that New Zealand was working on the sarao birth-rato as was

tlvo case 30 years ago. Ho was surprised to have heard a statement to the elfecfc that a shipment of fifty hoys would disorganise tho labour market. The. increase of population in tho towns was as 25 per cent, as against 10 per cent, in the country districts. He wont on to say that more population was needed now hecausc more lands, including Native lands, were becoming available. It was a well-known fact that many of the best farmers in Now Zealand were originally farm workers in different parts of tho Dominion. Then there was .tho Imperial aspect of the question of immigration.
