His Excellency the Governor (Lord Islington), accompanied by Mr. Kerr Clark (private secretary), and Lady Beatrice Kerr Clark, paid an informal visit to, the Home of Compassion at Island Bay yesterday. •
■ The.cable message published yesterday intimating th.atthe.-Duke of Devonshire had presented Sir Frederick Young, vice-president of the Royal Colonial Institute, with a silver cup. will be gratifying to the old colonials of this Dominion, as Sir Frederick Young was intimately connected with the New Zealand Land Company from its inception. In a letter received by Mr. T. W. M'Kenzie from Sir Frederick Young by the last mail, he states that "If I live till the 20th of June (next month) I shall havo obtained the great age of 93. I am still fairly active, thank God, in doing what I can to promote the permanent 1 union of our great Empire."
Our Masterton correspondent states that Mr. L. G. Reid, the new stipendiary magistrate for the AYairarapa district, will to take up duty on July 20. Mr. C. C. Graham, S'.M., 'who has been taking the Court work in the district for some time past, returns to Dunctfiu.
The Hon. E. Mitcholsott, of Auckland, is at present in AYellington on business, and is staying at the Grand Hotel.
The Mayor of AYanganui (Mr. C. E. Mackay), who Jias been attending the Municipal Conference, and Mrs. Mackay are staying at the Gra-nd Hotel.
Mr. T. Cole, Mayor of Duuedin, is at present staging at the Grand Hotel.
Mr., Bassett, the well-known timber merchant, of AVanganui, who went to Australia to attend the Methodist Conference as a delegate, has been detained owing to the illness of his daughter in Melbourne.

According to a Press Association telegram, Mr.\ J. T. M. Hornsby, who announced his intention when defeated for the Wairarapa seat not to seek election again, has mow changed his mind, and will be a candidate at the next election.
Dr. Von Prowazek and Dr. Leber, of Hamburg, who arrived from Sydney on Wednesday, left for Rotorua, en route to' the Islands, to investigate matters concerning recent sickness which has occurred among tho natives..

Mr. Walter New-ton, who has been Inspector of, Awards at Wellington since February, 1909, is being transferred on promotion to Dunedin. During the timo ho has been stationed in tbis city, Mr. Newton, has n the respect and esteem of all parties. He previously acted in the same capacity at Ohristchurch for two years, and before that ho was in charge of tho Department's branch at Masterton. Ho leaves for tho south at the end of next week. His successor will be Mr. Ernest Lo Cren, who is now Inspector of Awards at Dunedin, and formerly occupied tho position here.
'I'ho report that Mr. A. R. Blandford, of Wanspmii, has accepted an engagement in tho Nellie Stewart Company is contradicted.
