PUBLIC ILL-MANNERS

Sir,—Permit me, by your courtesy, to call attention to a glaring instance, of public ill-inanners, and to solicit, your powerful assistance to prevent a repetition of an exasperating nuisance. I had the pleasure last Sunday night' of attending the fine' concert given by the Wellington Professional Orchestra, but the enjoyment of a really meritorious performance was greatly discounted by the constant and irritating tapping of feet, endeavouring, with but meagre success, to keep time to the music. Particularly was this nuisance noticeable in the beautifnl lilting music of Massaniello, but all the numbers were treated to tho same questionable embellishment.. AYhether it was merely my ill-fortune to happen into proximity with a number of peculiarly ill-mannered persons, 1 or whether it is a result of tho cosmopolitan nature of a AVellington audience, I do not know, but certainly, although I have attended many such concerts in other centres, . I have never before experienced the nuisance complained of. X. might add a few remarks about the habit of talking more- or less audibly at concerts and operas, but refrain, and hope to bo able to feel thankful for small mercies.. Thanking you in anticipation of your assistance in checking a most irritating practice,—l am, etc., C.S.
