A successful "social," given under the auspices of the St. Augustine s i oung Men's Bible Class, was held in the \ ictoria Street Hall last evening, lliero was a largo attendance ot young people, and a thoroughly enjoyable time was spent by all present. Tho monthly "social" of the lotono Methodist Church was held last evening. There wero about 130 members and friends present, and the meeting was presided over by the Itev. .Mr. Seamcr. A capital programme of songs, instrumental music, and dialogues was submitted. During the evening a purse oi sovereigns was presented to Miss V. J. Kirlt. iu recognition of her services as organist. A ii.ro broke , out at Alicetown m an unoccupied live-roomed house at. an earl} hour yesterday morning, the building being owned by Mr. T. Colley. The brigade promptly got to work, but were unable to savo much of the building. It was insured iu the State office for AloO, but. Mr. Coffey will bo a considerable loser. I'lie origin of the lire is unknuwn. Tho Alicetown Congregational Sunday School anniversary tea and public meeting took placo on Wednesday evening. There was a good attendance, and the Kev M. H. Harris presided. .The report of the treasurer (Miss I'. Wright) was received, and showed: receipts, ,£IU (is. GJd.j expenditure, ,£lO ss. ftd.; leaving a balance of .£() 18s. 11(1. The secretary (Mr. l f '. Ludlow) presented the general report,, which made mention, inter alia, of the successful picnic held during the year. The attendance had been very "ood" when ono remembered the nature of the roads over which the children had to travel, while the teachers had rendered splendid service. The speakers during the evening were: tho Kev. W. A. lllvans, of Wellington, Mr. Laukshear, and tho I!cv. J. H. Glasson, of the Terrace Church. The prizes were then distributed bv Mr. G. Hepple (superintendent of the school). Master Max Ludlow gained first prize among the boys with. 228 marks ont of a possible. 200, and Miss Post gaining first with 220 marks among the girls. Ten others won prizes with marks langing from 210 to 106. Each child iu the infant division received an illuminated text as a reminder of the anniversary K-ason. Mr. C. P. Brocklebank has definitely decided to contest the vacant seat on the Pctono Borough Council. Others likely are: Messrs. T. Townseiul and AY. Hill. It is reported that ex-Councillor Colquhoun, whose seat was declared vacant, intends to stand again for the position.
