OUR FIRE-FIGHTERS.

INTERESTING DEMONSTRATIONS. For tho edification of tho visiting delegates to the Municipal Conference, tho City Fire Brigade, under Superintendent O'Brien gave an interesting demonstration in the vicinity of the Central Fire Brigade Station yesterday morning. The demonstration was witnessed by a fairly big crowd of spectators, and was preceded by an official inspection by the members of the Fire Brigade Committee, during which the men "stood by" at their appointed stations. Then the real business commenced. At the sound of a shrill whistle, the stalile doors at the rear flew open, and the horses trotted out to the brigade wagon, to which they were hooked up in less tlmo than it takes to write the fact, the crew leaped on board, the doors opened, and the pair tore out across the street at a hard galfop. From another door the motor-engine had, a few seconds before, fussed out at a great rate, less spectacular the view, but very grim and business-like, -while the hose-ladder, drawn by a powerful horso, rattled out of the middle door. Close by was tho chemical engine of tho Thorndon Station. Tho next few minutes saw the brigado in action. The fire-plugs in the street were opened up, and quick connections made wHli the, long hose pipes which formed part of the equipment of each branch of the city fire department. The next few seconds saw tlio hose-pipo in action, sending a powerful jet about from GO to 70 feet in, the air. Then up came the hose-ladder, drawn bv a sage-looking horse. In a trice the ladder was erected to tho fullest extent, and up the long sinuous body of the pipe there camo a powerful ,iel. The chemical engine also got In several smart actions., and thp whole business of fire-fighting was .gono through. The demonstration was very successful indeed.
