During the Juno quarter fifty-live old age pensions were issued at tlio Magistrate s Court at Masterton, and five refused. 11l the first round of the Friendly Societies' card tournament, which opened last night, the Hibernians defeated the .Druids by 27 to 22. At the conclusion of the games an enjoyable social gathering was held. ~ There was a good attendance of niembers and iriemls 'at the Women's^Christian Temperance Union meeting in Knox Hall yesterday afternoon, at which .Mrs. Devenport presided. An interesting and encouraging address was given bv Mrs. Cap Lain Adams. It was decided to hotel vile annual district convention on Tuesday, September (>, when delegates will meet in conference during the day, and a united public meeting will be lield at night. Delegates will be present from "Wellington and suburbs, Levin, Otaki, Pctone, and Hutt. Considerable discussion took place at the meeting of the Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board to-day on the proposal of Mr. D. Creeve, of Pahiatua, that sub-committees should furnish monthly statements to the board of moneys dispensed. Tho chairman stated that it was provided in tho Act that quarterly statements should bo made, and ho thought that this Was sufficient. Mr. Fisher (Carterton) said that if tho subcommittees had to furnish monthly details of all expenditure good men would not act on such committees. Mr. Moss (Bketahuna) seconded the resolution, and stated that the board should have control over the whole of its finances. Tlio motion was lost by seven votes to five.

Municipal. A meeting of the Works and Financo Committee of the Masterton Borough Council was held last evening at which Councillor J. Li. Pauling presided. The manager of the gasworks reported that the gas manufactured during the months of April and .May showed a decrease of L.ll per cent., and the gas sold per meter a decrease ol' I.HB per cent, as compared with tiie corresponding period of last year. Tho gas manufactured in April last totalled 4,800,001) cubic i'eet, and the gas sold fur the same period, 3.584,000 cubic feet. The cash receipts for April and may showed a net decrease of .£l2 7s. lid. compared with April ami May, l'JOt). Fire Bricade. The annual meeting of the Masterton Fire Brigade was held last evening, superintendent Jenkins occupying the chair. The superintendent and Braiichmau Johnston were appointed to represent, the brigade at the annual "smoke concert" at Carterton. Superintendent Jenkins, delegate to the Hastings Conference, presented the brigade with a framed idiotograph of the delegates, for which ho was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The annua! report and balance-sheet were submitted by the secretary (Mr. Pickering) and disclosed a satisfactory state of affairs. iiranehinan Johnston was elected a member of the executive. An Operetta. Ail operetto "The Egyptian Princess" was produced in the Town Hall iast evening in aid of a fund lor procuring a new motor for St. Matthew's Church organ. The audience was both large and appreciative. The music was light and sparkling anil the dresses charming and appropriate. The operetta was produced' under the eomiuctorship uf Mr. li. S. Claughton, L.T.C.L., upon whom the performance reflected great credit. The dancers had been skiilully trained by Mrs. Kendall. During an interval in tho performance, those taking part presented Mr. Claughton with a baton and Mrs. Kendall with a silver-mounted butterdish. Hospital Board. A meeting of the,. Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid' Board was held in the offices of the M.nsterton County Council to-day, there being present Messrs. E. G. Kton (chairman), li. F. li. Bcetham, D. Crewe, W. Fisher, T. Moss, S. Bolton, J. W. Murray, W. Mooro A. J. Speedy, K. G. Welch, F. W. Kummer, and G. F. Bennett. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. D. M'Beod and H. Morrison. Plans of the proposed additions to the Lireytown Hospital were submitted by Mc-ssrs. Varnham and liose, architects, who estimated thu cost al something under .t'3ooo. Tho plans had, it was stated, been approved by ]Jr. Valintine, Inspector-General of Hospitals. It was decided that tenders be called for the erection ot' tlio new buildings, these to eloso on August 2. It was also resolved that applications be invited lor the position of clepk of works, and that tenders be called for the purchase and removal of the old buildings. Mr. W. Boss, of Martinborough, was appointed to the sub-committee of the South Wairarapa Hospital, in place oi Mr. A. Booth. The Maurieeville, Kketahuua, and Fealhevsion County Cmiiieilii wrote, expressing their willingness to dispense charitable aid within their respective districts. The Masterton County Council wrote, stating that its chamber was at tho disposal of the board lor meetings. The action of the chairman in ; paying tiie lalo secretary of the Benevolent Trust i.n increased salary for the last month in which he was tilling the position was confirmed. Letters from Maurieeville and Kkeiahuun Committers in reference to special cases of relief were .dealt with. Mr'. .Mark Maxton addressed tho boaid relative to his position on the Oreytoivn Benevolent Trust Committeo. It was stated that the Inspector-General was taking advice on the subject. A letter from Air. I{. Pilcaithly, of Tawataia, asking if the board could find someone to act as postmaster or postmistress at Tawiitsiia, at a remuneration of about J;;lO per year, was relerred to the Benevolent Trustees. A sum of .410 was voted to Mr. P. G. Moore for services to the Wairarapa District Hospital Board.

Fire Police. The annual meeting of the Masterton "Fire Police was held last evening, Captain Dixon presiding. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Captain, Mr. J. Dixon; iirst lieutenant, Mr. I'. lio'obins; second lieutenant.
